Over the weekend on August 23, Kobe Bryant would have turned 42-years-old. Bryant is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time and he spent his whole career playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. While playing for the Lakers, he won 5 NBA championships and he was an 18-time All-Star. Plus Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice and ranks fourth on the league’s all-time regular-season scoring and all-time postseason scoring lists.

Bryant was born in Philadelphia and spent a portion of his life in Italy. Bryant’s father is former NBA player Joe Bryant and While in high school at Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, Bryant became recognized as one of the best athletes in school. After high school, Bryant declared for the 1996 NBA draft. He was selected by the Charlotte Hornets as the 13th overall pick, but then the Hornets traded him to the Lakers. Along with winning NBA championships, Bryant was also in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics where he won two gold medals as part of the U.S. national team. On top of that, Bryant won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his 2017 film Dear Basketball.

Sadly, Bryant died at age 41 along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others due to blunt force trauma caused by a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. The helicopter was heading to a basketball game at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in Newbury Park where Bryant was scheduled to coach Gianna’s team.
