Moto G5 Review

Updated June 19, 2018 By Pulse 2.0 Staff

The Moto G5 and G5 Plus devices are Motorola Mobility’s flagship smartphones for 2017. Some of the best features for these low-cost devices include a 5-inch display, an aluminum metal body, fast charging and a fingerprint reader.

Design

The design of the Moto G5 and G5 Plus is akin to some of the other premium smartphones on the market such as the iPhone 7, Galaxy S8 and LG G6. It has rounded edges and the standard volume and power buttons on the sides.

Right below the display is a fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor also acts as a mini trackpad, known as One Button Nav.

The back of the device has Moto?s logo embedded with the rear-facing camera directly above it. The camera cover on the back of the Moto G5 and G5 Plus appears larger than other smartphones.

The size of the 5-inch Moto G5 is 144.3 x 73 x 9.5 mm (5.68 x 2.87 x 0.37 in) and the 5.2-inch G5 Plus is 150.2 x 74 x 7.7 mm (5.91 x 2.91 x 0.30 in). This will definitely feel larger in the palm of your hand and may take some time getting used to.

Display

The Moto G5 and G5 Plus displays are 5-inch and 5.2-inch Full HD, respectively. The displays are protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Both devices have 1920 x 1080 pixel resolutions. The G5 display has a 441ppi and the G5 Plus has a 424ppi. The Full HD display offers vivid colors and details that you would expect from premium devices.

Performance

The Moto G5 and G5 Plus have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, respectively. The memory ranges between 2GB and 4GB depending on the version of the device you have. Apps and videos should run smoothly, but higher-end games will likely show some signs of lag.

Storage

There are two storage options for the G5 and G5 Plus: 16GB and 32GB. This does not seem high, but it is expandable up to 256GB.

Camera

The camera varies depending on the device you have. The rear-facing camera on the Moto G5 is a 13-megapixel with f/2.0 aperture and records video in 1080p. The Moto G5 front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel with f/2.2 aperture.

The Moto G5 Plus rear-facing camera on the Moto G5 Plus is a 12-megapixel with a f/1.7 aperture and records video in 4K. And the Moto G5 Plus front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel with f/2.2 aperture.

I think that the 4K recording feature on the G5 Plus is a huge selling point for the larger-sized Moto G5 device. For a lower-end device, the front-facing camera is pretty sharp ? which is great for taking selfies.

Battery

There is a 2,800 mAh battery built into the Moto G5 and G5 Plus. This is enough to go from morning till night without having to plug in. And since the Moto G comes with a 10W rapid charger, it gives your phone hours of battery life in a few minutes of battery charging. There is also a TurboPower charging feature that means it gets six hours of battery charge in about 15 minutes, but this requires a separate charger.

What Are The Pros and Cons?

Pros

1.) Even though it does not have an IP rating, the Moto G5 and G5 Plus has water-repellent coating.

2.) There is a 3.5mm jack so you will not need a special pair of headphones for audio

3.) Moto Actions are built-in

4.) Low-price

Cons

1.) Lack of NFC so Android Pay does not work

2.) Lower-end chipset

3.) Small amount of built-in storage

4.) 1080p video recording seems outdated for newer devices
