Actor, writer, producer, and director Tyler Perry now has a net worth of over $1 billion, according to Forbes. Known for the Madea series of movies, Perry went from living in poverty to owning multiple homes, private jets, and a 330-acre studio in Atlanta.
“I love when people say you come from ‘humble beginnings…’ [It] means you were poor as hell,” said Perry in an interview with Forbes. “Ownership… changes everything.”
Perry owns his 22 feature films and two dozen stage plays along with the 1,200+ TV episodes.
With control over the content he creates, Perry also has a deal with ViacomCBS that pays him $150 million a year for new content and gives him an equity stake in BET+. Forbes estimated that Perry earned over $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005. And Perry’s homes spread across Atlanta, LA, New York, and Jackson Hole are valued at about $40 million. Perry’s library of work is reportedly valued at $320 million and the studio in Atlanta is valued at about $280 million.
Perry is planning to build restaurants, stores, and an entertainment complex on the studio lot. Perry also plans to finance productions from Black creators who often get overlooked in Hollywood. And he is building a compound for trafficked women, homeless women, and LGBTQ youth who are displaced.
“I’ll tell you what I’m most excited about next is pulling this next phase off,” explained Perry in an interview with Gayle King via CBS. “Somewhere on these 330 acres, where they’re trained in the business and they become self-sufficient. They live in nice apartments. There’s daycare. There’s all of these wonderful things that allows them to reenter society. And then pay it forward again.”
