  • The stock price of Unilever N.V. (NYSE: UL) went up by over 8% during intraday trading today. This is why it happened.

The stock price of Unilever N.V. (NYSE: UL) went up by over 8% during intraday trading today. Investors responded positively to reports that activist investor Nelson Peltz increased his stake in Unilever.

Peltz’s hedge fund Trian Partners had built up an unspecified number of shares in Unilever, according to Reuters’ sources. And Peltz has a reputation for proposing operational changes in portfolio companies like Procter & Gamble.

The leadership of Unilever CEO Alan Jope has come into question after the company pursued the acquisition of GlaxoSmithKline’s consumer health business for 50 billion pounds (about $67.50 billion). This would have been one of the largest deals on the London market if it went through.
