Kongregate Receives Seed Funding and Then Launches Beta

Kongregate is a San Francisco-based gaming community website that focuses on user-uploaded games and the social features around it. Today the company has announced that it launched its beta and is backed by seed funding from Reid Hoffman (founder of LinkedIn), Joe Kraus (co-founder of Excite and JotSpot), Jeff Clavier (SoftTech VC), and Richard Wolpert (former Disney Online president). The amount of seed funding received is nearly $1 million.

“Several other features make Kongregate a highly integrated gaming community, such as the ability to earn points and level up, unlock special powers, and collect cards for the completion of tasks” according to Pete Cashmore of Mashable. Kongregate has Games uploaded of various categories including Action, Racing, Shooter, Sports, and Puzzle & Strategy.

Games are also sorted by newest games, highest rated games, and recommended games based on your reactions. Kongregate also has forums that users can subscribe to via RSS as well.

The co-founders of Kongregate are Jim and Emily Greer. Jim Greer was previously the Director of Electronic Art’s Pogo.com.
