When accepting the award at the 21st Century Visionary award at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club earlier this week, Jack Dorsey spoke about Twitter and Square. Dorsey is a co-founder at Twitter and founded Square. Dorsey said that the company name Square was almost named “Squirrel” and the card reader dongle was made of wood and shaped like an acorn.
The name Squirrel was believed to have been used even before Square made the announcement in December 2009. When Dorsey sat down and had a lunch at Apple, the design of the dongle changed and the company named changed afterwards. Dorsey had the launch with Apple SVP of iPhone Software Scott Forstall.
