Square Was Almost Named Squirrel Until Dorsey Had Lunch At Apple

When accepting the award at the 21st Century Visionary award at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club earlier this week, Jack Dorsey spoke about Twitter and Square.

Dorsey is a co-founder at Twitter and founded Square. And Dorsey said that the company name Square was almost named “Squirrel” because the card reader dongle was made of wood and shaped like an acorn. The name Squirrel was believed to have been used even before Square launched in December 2009.

Shortly after Dorsey sat down and had a lunch with Apple’s SVP of iPhone Software Scott Forstall. Dorsey reportedly decided to change the name after he saw a point-of-sale system at the Apple cafe from a company that was called “Squirrel systems.”
