Akamai Technologies announced this week that they have entered a definitive agreement to buy Prolexic Technologies for a net cash payment of around $370 million. Based in Hollywood, Florida, Prolexic is a cloud based security company that focuses on data center and enterprise application security. The company is known for helping prevent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
The United States has dropped in terms of Internet connection speeds ranking. Akamai, the third global web traffic company, has released their State of the Internet Report. These stats are based on the first quarter of the year. The U.S. dropped one place from the previous quarter to 9th place. They are hitting around 8.6 megabits per second. Sweden is in eight place with an average connection speed of 8.9 megabits per second. The mobile networks were not included.

Akamai Technologies is a CDN company that is announcing today that they are naming Tom Leighton as the CEO of the company. Leighton is a professor of Applied Mathematics at MIT and co-founded Akamai with Daniel Lewin in 1998. Lewin had served four years in the Israel Defense Forces before he passed away on September 11, 2001 (9/11) when he was fatally stabbed aboard American Airlines Flight 11 by a terrorist when trying to foil the hijacking. Leighton is the chief scientist of the company and he will be replacing Paul Sagan as the CEO. Sagan announced plans to step down from the company by the end of 2013.
Akamai Technologies Inc. has announced that they have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Verivue in a cash transaction. Verivue will complement Akamai’s Aura Network Solutions division. Verivue will help Akamai speed up their time to market to provide a licensed content delivery network solution for network operators.
Akamai Technologies has announced today that they have bought FastSoft Inc. FastSoft is a content acceleration software company. The acquisition was made in cash. This acquisition will be complemented with Akamai’s cloud infrastructure solutions with technology that helps optimize video and other digital content across IP networks.
