Skype 1.1 Gets Released On iPhone, No Push Yet

Skype for the iPhone was released back in April and now the application has been updated. The new version of the Skype iPhone application allows users to send SMS messages and check voicemail. One of the desired features that are lacking in the newest version of the application is push notifications.
“Skype iPhone is kinda useless with no push notifications so 1.1 still kinda useless. Why even include IM capability without it, what are people supposed to do – send me an email that we should skype chat?” wrote a commenter on the Skype Blog.
Push notifications are the ability to inform the iPhone there are incoming messages and incoming calls without the need for the application to be running at the time. AOL has successfully implemented this feature for their AOL Instant Messenger software on the iPhone.
“We’re concentrating on providing the very best experience possible on the iPhone. Your feedback is important – it’s why we’ve included SMS and voicemail in this release. But we can’t do everything at once, unfortunately,” wrote Skype blogger Peter Parkes.
How To Enable Tethering On iPhone 3.0

Apparently there is a way to enable tethering by modifying the code on the iPhone OS 3.0. If you are going to pursue this, I can only say it is at your own risk and I do not claim responsibility for what happens after. Read this whole post before getting started as there are two ways to get er’ done.
CrunchGear has a tutorial of how it works:
1. Download the carrier update from here.
2. Type this into the terminal:
- defaults write com.apple.iTunes
- carrier-testing -bool TRUE
After that start up iTunes and click the Restore button. Select the ipcc file in the disk image. After the restoration is complete, there will be an Internet Tethering option under the network section.
Another way to turn on tethering is by going to the link: http://help.benm.at/help.php on the phone browser. The steps on that website tell you how to set up and download tethering abilities through the phone.

TweetDeck App Hits The iPhone [Screenshots]

TweetDeck is one of the most used Twitter third party software programs, powered by Adobe AIR. Without TweetDeck, I probably would never be able to use Twitter. Now that program made its way to the iPhone. ”I can say now that it’s going to replace tweetie as my default twitter iphone app,” stated Rose on his blog.
Some of the features include column based friend groups just like the TweetDeck desktop software. There is also TweetDeck desktop syncing so that any changes made on the iPhone gets reflected on the computer. There is also a way to track status updates on Facebook in a toolbar format.
After the jump are several screenshots that I grabbed from Kevin Rose’s blog. The application is available for free on iTunes right now:

AT&T To Charge $70/Month For Tethering? Ridiculous.

Earlier today Apple announced a new line of products and a new iPhone. This will be written a little bit later today. Two features that the iPhone will soon have will not be available without a substantial price to the consumer. The new iPhone operating system and iPhone will support tethering and MMS.
Unlimited MMS and SMS will be unlimited at the cost of $20/month. The reason why MMS isn’t available right now is because AT&T has to manually remove the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each of their accounts. MMS will work on the final OS 3.0 build right away when it is launched on June 17.
According to Boy Genius Report, AT&T is also in process of putting together a plan that will cost $70 per month for unlimited data and tethering. SMS and MMS will not be included as part of that $70 per month. Personally I think AT&T is screwing over their customers (including myself) here. Just to have a basic plan and a data plan with tethering, that would run at least $120 per month without text messaging. That is about the same monthly payment as a car lease.

Carphone Warehouse Inventory System Reports New 16GB and 32GB iPhone V3

Carphone Warehouse is one of the biggest European mobile phone retail companies. Apparently someone that has access to their system took a picture of the inventory system and mailed it to AppleInsider. The placeholders report that there will soon be the following items in inventory:
- Apple IPhone 16GbV3 Black
- Apple IPhone 16GbV3 White
- Apple IPhone 32GbV3 Black
- Apple IPhone 16GbV3 White
The WWDC conference will be taking place on June 8-12 and Apple is due to announce a new set of phones along with the new firmware version 3.0. A few days ago, several new images of a potentially new phone’s features appeared on a Hong Kong blog. This evidence further validates the plausibility of a new iPhone.

Screenshots Of New iPhone Features Emerge

Over the weekend, a few pictures have been leaked at what is believed to be the features of a new iPhone. Next week, Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference will be taking place in San Francisco, California. Above are the screenshots that Gizmodo found on a Hong Kong blog.
The photos are pretty blurry, but you will notice that a lot of the features look like it would be expected coming from Apple. There is a full 360 compass pictured on the top left, a recording microphone in the middle top, a landscape touchscreen QWERTY keyboard in the top right, MMS menu in the bottom left, advanced camera features in the middle bottom, and some sort of image focus recognition in the bottom right.
Regardless, we’ll find out more in about a week.
Yahoo! Abandoning Mobile Initiatives On Smartphones To Focus On iPhone

Here is some news that is a blow to those that have a smartphone and enjoyed using Yahoo!’s Mobile services. Yahoo! will be abandoning the efforts to update their mobile applications for the BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, etc. Instead Yahoo! will be focusing their Mobile services on the Apple iPhone.
Below is a statement from a Yahoo! spokesperson:
We are reprioritizing some products to help us better deliver the best possible experiences to consumers on mobile. To streamline our services, we will not develop Yahoo! Mobile for smartphones to focus our efforts on mobilizing Yahoo!, improving Yahoo! Mobile for web and Yahoo! Mobile for iPhone as well as developing new and engaging experiences for consumers, partners and advertisers.
We currently have mobile products that reach hundreds of different devices (including Blackberry), and we continue to expand that comprehensive list.
There is a new version of Yahoo! Mobile for smartphones being developed at http://new.m.yahoo.com. But in terms of giving developers a beta program for the product, this will not be available starting May 20.

Shane Becker Gets Arrested For Taking Picture Of ATM Being Refilled

The beauty about the iPhone camera is that it is a hotbed for amateur photography. In the case of Seattle man Shane Becker his amateur photography got him in trouble with the police.
Shane took a picture of two men refilling a Bank of America ATM on May 8 in the downtown R.E.I. store. Shane was in line to buy a Thule hitch mount bike rack. Since the customer service had a long line Shane had time to notice employees of Loomis refilling the ATM and so he walked over and took a picture of them on his iPhone.
“I did not take the picture to case the joint. I did not take the picture to threaten the safety of the two Loomis fake cops with their bulletproof vests, hip side pistols and very fragile egos. I did not take the picture to make it easier for anyone else to rob this or any other ATM. I just like to see things that I don’t normally get to see. (Just like when I was in Vancouver, BC with Fall Out Boy, I got to see the stage being constructed… and took pictures of it.),” wrote Shane on his blog.
The bald Loomis employee told Shane to come talk to him after he was done with the purchase. After Shane refused, the Loomis employees called the police. The Loomis employees wanted Shane’s ID so that they could report it to their boss as well. After some going back and forth, Shane had a conversation with a police officer about 9/11 and photography:
Officer Debra Pelich (#5976): Remember 9/11? I saw pictures of those buildings. One time when I was in Florida I was wandering around taking pictures. A security team came up and told me it was a high security restricted area. I wasn’t supposed to be taking pictures there. I explained that I didn’t know that, was a police officer, showed them my ID and complied with them. We cleared it up and I left.
Shane Becker: Since you managed to pull the 9/11 card somehow, does that mean that everyone that took a picture of those buildings—
An officer put handcuffs on Shane after that comment and took him to the Seattle Police Department West Precinct. While Shane was getting arrested, Mark Sangerman took a picture using his iPhone:

The Princeton Review Releases iPhone App Sat Vocab Challenge

The Princeton Review, Inc. (NASDAQ:REVU) has decided to get into the iPhone application market. Earlier this week, the tutoring company released an application called the SAT Vocab Challenge. The application tests users with the ability to comprehend 250 words, including The Princeton Review’s Hit Parade. The Hit Parade is a list of 100 words that often times appear on the SAT exam.
“Vocabulary building is one of the easiest, most effective ways to improve an SAT score, but it requires time and discipline on the part of the student,” stated The Princeton Review VP/Publisher Robert Franek. “The revolutionary iPhone and iPod touch have enabled us to strip away the typical barriers to study so students can carry hundreds of need-to-know words with them everywhere they go, and challenge themselves with fast-paced drills for a meaningful study session, whether they have five free minutes or an entire weekend.”
The Princeton Review was able to put together the application with the help of Modality. The SAT Vocab Challenge sells for $4.99 [iTunes link] and has features such as timed challenges to test users on a word’s connotations, synonyms, antonyms, and the definition. The performance of the student is tracked by the application and there is audio pronunciation of each word.

Namco’s Dig Dug Remix Arrives On The iPhone

Dig Dug was a classic arcade game made in 1982 by Namco. Atari published the maze-based game shortly after the game was made for arcades. The objective of the game is to eliminate ground-dwelling monsters while digging through mazes. Eliminating monsters requires the Dig Dug character to inflate them using his pump.
For those of you that want to relive their youth, but don’t have access to an Atari or the Dig Dug arcade, you can pick up a copy of the game for $5.99 through the iTunes App Store. The $5.99 that you pay will allow you to play the classic version or the remixed, new version of the game that features new levels, new enemies, and new power ups.
Namco has done something similar with Galaga Remix. Around February 2007, the Digg staff was looking for someone to help fix their Dig Dug machine. The game also works for the iPod Touch.
