Audio equipment maker Bose announced it has named Lila Snyder as its CEO, effective on September 1. This is the first time that Bose — which was established in 1964 — will have a woman CEO. Snyder is succeeding Phil Hess who stepped down earlier this year.

Bose Chairman Bob Maresca confirmed the appointment of Snyder earlier this week. Snyder was previously the president of global e-commerce at Pitney Bowes. And Snyder also previously worked as a partner at McKinsey. Snyder has master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT.

Snyder is becoming the head of Bose during a tumultuous year. In January, Bose announced it was shutting down 199 store locations in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan due to a shift in online shopping. So her background in e-commerce will be essential during the company’s transitional year.

“We weren’t simply looking for the next qualified person to lead us. We wanted the absolute best person, no matter how long the search took. Lila’s background, experience, track record, and values are right for Bose, for the exceptional people who work here, and for our amazing customers who count on us every day,” said Maresca in a statement.

Bose does not report earnings as it is a private company.
