Google+ Will Have Real Business Profiles, So Don’t Create One Yet

Google’s Christian Oestlien has released a video warning Google+ users not to create business profiles with the social network. Oestlien, the Google+ Ads Lead, says that business profiles will be shut down by the policy team. Search Engine Land reports that there will be a test group of what Google calls “non-user profiles,” which companies can apply for here.

Google AdWords Uses Behavioral Targeting to Enhance Your Advertising Experience

Google’s AdWords advertisers now have more customization options, with the ability to target ads to consumers based on their browsing activity. Google started beta testing the behavioral targeting in 2009, but is now available to all advertisers. The update also gives more options to the users, who can use Google’s Ad Preferences page to see the categories their web browsing has linked them with, and edit them or opt out of the behavioral targeting. There are more than a thousand categories in AdWords’s behavioral targeting program, which means more sales for the advertisers and more relevant ads for the consumers. [Search Engine Land]

EU Sides With Google Over Keywords On AdWords

The European Union of Justice has sided with Google today over Google AdWords keywords.  The European Court of Justice was reviewing whether there was trade mark infringement violations when advertisers bid for keywords that corresponded with competitors’ products and services.

“It also confirmed that European law that protects internet hosting services applies to Google’s AdWords advertising system,” stated Google Senior Litigation Counsel of EMEA Dr. Harjinder S. Obhi. “This is important because it is a fundamental principle behind the free flow of information over the internet.” Google AdWords is a major component of the company’s overall revenue so this is a huge win for the search engine company. Google Ann Arbor Exec Grady Burnett Leaves To Become Facebook Sales Head

grady-burnett
Last month University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Google co-founder Larry Page gave a commencement speech.  One of the reasons why Google has a major advertising operations office in Ann Arbor is because Page is deeply tied to the city.  His parents had actually met each at the University of Michigan according to Page’s speech.

Unfortunately for Google, the head of advertising operations at the Google Ann Arbor office Grady Burnett has stepped down to become the head of global online and inside sales at Facebook.  Facebook Inc. has about $716 million in total funding and is pushing towards $500 million in revenue this year.

Burnett has been leading the AdWords division in Ann Arbor since 2006 and he will be replaced by Mike Miller.

“As you might imagine, this was a hard decision for me and my family. We love Michigan and I thoroughly enjoyed my nearly four years working for Google,” stated Burnett in an e-mail to CrainsDetroit.com.

FPX Suing Google Over AdWords On Behalf Of All Texas Trademark Owners

fpx-logo
This is the first time that I’ve heard of a company suing Google on behalf of a bunch of other people and companies.  FPX, LLC (also known as Firepond) is taking Google to court  over their AdWords service.  Firepond claims that selling keywords that Google does not have trademarks for on AdWords is a violation.

Below is an excerpt from the document filed against Google at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas Marshall Division:

“Defendant Google sells search terms, including registered trademarks (including the Firepond Marks and the Class Marks) to advertisers who are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or authorized by the trademark owners.  It is Google’s policy and practice to display the advertisements of those who buy the keywords on the top or right side of the first page of results when an Internet User uses the Google search engine to search for the trademark as a search term.  It is Google’s policy that it will sell any trademark to any advertiser, regardless of whether the advertiser is affiliated with, sponsored by, or authorized by the trademark owner.  Further, it is Google’s policy that it will not remove or disable any link to any advertisement, even after receiving actual notice that the advertisement is infringing a registered trademark, unless the advertisement actually uses the trademark in the text of the ad.  If the trademark does not appear in the text of the ad, Google’s policy is that it will not remove or disable any link, even after receiving actual notice of infringement.  Google’s policy and practice of selling registered trademarks as keywords and/or adwords to competitors of the trademark holders shall be referred to herein as the ‘Deceptive Trademark Practice.’”

If this class action lawsuit actually makes it to the court and FPX actually wins an injunction on behalf of everyone in Texas that owns a trademark word that can be bought on AdWords, that would be a huge problem for the search engine company.  Fortunately for Google, they have a massive enough budget to handle such litigation.

Google Ends Print Advertising Program

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) will be ending their Print Ads service.  Google launched the Prints Ads service through Google AdWords in November 2006.  Google launched this program with 50 newspaper partners on board.  Spencer Spinnell, Director of Print Ads for Google announced in a blog post that the program will officially halt on February 2008.  Campaigns that are already booked will run up until March 31.

About 800 newspaper companies including The New York Times, Hearst, and Scripps joined the program since they started it.

“While we hoped that Print Ads would create a new revenue stream for newspapers and produce more relevant advertising for consumers, the product has not created the impact that we — or our partners — wanted,” wrote Spinnell on the Google Traditional Media blog.

Spinnell mentioned that Google will try to help newspaper companies as best as they can.  However several newspaper companies have accused Google for copyright infringement by listing snippets of content on Google News without permission.

This is one of many services that Google has decided to fold recently.  Google Video stopped supporting uploads. And Jaiku, Mashup Editor, Dodgeball, Catalog Search, and Google Notebook will all be shutting down.
