Samsung Zipel Can Be Controlled From Android Phone


The Samsung Zipel smart oven is going to be rolled out in Korea. The smart oven has built-in WiFi that allows the device to communicate with your Android-based smartphone, which can be used to dial the oven in for 160 different dishes. The Zipel is an infrared oven that has a number of “smart” features including the ability to display a number of calories in a particular dish. Unfortunately there is no word on price or availability or whether it will be released outside of Korea. [The Verge]

Box Giving Android Users 50GB Of Free Storage


Box has updated their Android application. The company is giving 50GB of free storage to any Android user who logs in during the next 30 days. This isn’t the first time that Box has offered 50GB to certain users. Box.net offered 50GB of free storage to anyone with a Sony Ericsson or LG Android phone back in November 2011. Other features in the Android update include a new user interface and Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility. Box.net worked directly with Google on the new design.

Google To Start Selling Glasses With Augmented Reality By End-Of-Year


According to several Google employee sources with the New York Times, the company will start selling a pair of glasses that will be able to stream information to the person wearing them in real-time. The glasses will be available to the public by the end of the year. The glasses will cost between about $250 and $600.

Rumor: Google To Launch Android 5.0 In Q2 2012


Android 4.0 has not been widely as adopted as Google is expected so it is rumored that the company will be launching Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) in Q2 2012. The Android 5.0 operating system would compete head-on with Windows 8 for the tablet PC market according to Asian suppliers for the two companies.

Google Starts Rolling Out Chrome Browser For Android


Google has now created the Google Chrome browser for Android. The app that Android has been using up until now was simply called “Browser,” an open-source based browser that was decent. For a certain number of people, the Google Chrome browser is now available on Android devices.

Android Hits 39% Market Share For Tablets


Research firm Strategy Analytics has reported this morning that Android now has a 39% tablet OS market share as of the fourth quarter 2011. Apple still has the lead at 58% market share in Q4 2011, but they are down from 68% in the fourth quarter of 2010. However these numbers are based on “sell-in” rather than over-the-counter sales. What this means is that the numbers include Android tablets may still sit on retail shelves and never be bought. The Amazon Kindle Fire was also included in the Android market share numbers. Nielsen: iPhone Makes A Strong Comeback In Q4 [REPORT]


Nielsen has put together data about the latest smartphone market-share results for Q4 of 2011 and it appears that Apple has done significantly well. The study focused on consumers that purchased smartphones within the past three months. The number of iPhone buyers increased from 25% in October to 45% in December. During the same period, the number of Android buyers fell by 14%. The increase in iPhone buyers was mainly due to the release of the Apple iPhone 4S. [Nielsen]

LG Signs Patent Deal With Microsoft


LG Electronics has just signed a patent licensing deal with Microsoft. Microsoft has made patent licensing deals with companies that manufacture devices using Android tablets and smartphones. According to a press release from Microsoft, LG signed a patent agreement that covers LG’s use of Android and the Chrome operating system on tablets, mobile phones, and other devices.

Google Android Market Hits 400,000 Apps


The Google Android Market has surpassed 400,000 applications.  That means that 100,000 apps have been added between now and August 2011 and 200,000 more since April 2011.  Of these 400,000 applications, about 2/3 are available for free in the Android Market.  The percentage of free apps has grown month-over-month from 60% in April 2011 to 68% around the end of 2011.  Now there are about 100,000 publishers that are active in the application store.
