HTC Buys S3 Graphics for $300 Million

Smartphone manufacturer HTC acquired all outstanding shares of visualization tech company S3 Graphics for $300 million. HTC will take control of S3 Graphics’ team and intellectual properties. Of the company’s previous investors, VIA Technologies will receive $147 million and WTI Investment International will receive $153 million. [TechCrunch]

Analyst: HTC Pays Microsoft $5 For Every Android Phone That They Sell

It appears that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has an interest in Google Android doing well too. According to Citi analyst Walter Pritchard, Microsoft receives $5 for every HTC Android phone that is sold as part of a patent settlement.

The Verizon DROID Incredible 2 by HTC is going for sale on April 28. It has Android 2.2 built in and the cost is at $199.99 with a new two year agreement. The DROID Incredible 2 has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. The screen is a 4-inch WVGA display and the processor is a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon. U.S. ITC Staff Recommends HTC and Nokia Not Be Liable For Infringing


The U.S. International Trade Commission said that HTC and Nokia should not be found liable for infringing on Apple’s patents. Staff lawyer Erin Joffre disclosed their position on the matter during the ITC trial in Washington earlier this week. Apple is seeking that HTC mobile phones running on the Google Android operating system should be banned along with some of Nokia’s devices.

HTC Building A 16 Megapixel Windows Phone 7 Device


According to Pocketnow.com, HTC is building a Windows Phone 7 device that has a 16-megapixel camera with dual LED flash. This is about double what most of the newest smartphones have. Below is a placeholder video about the upcoming phone. This device would beat Altek’s 14-megapixel Leo smartphone device.

HTC Announces Sensation 4G and Watch Video Service


HTC has announced a new device called the Sensation 4G for T-Mobile USA. The Sensation 4G has a 4.3-inch display, qHD 960×540 pixel resolution, Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 1GB ROM, microSD card slot, 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS/aGPS receiver, and 1530 mAh battery. The HTC Watch video service is built in to the phone.

HTC Surpasses Nokia’s Market Cap


Asian smartphone company HTC Corporation (TPE:2498) has surpassed the market cap of Finland based Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK). HTC’s market cap has grown 30 times larger in the past 5 years. At one point yesterday, HTC was valued at $33.88 billion and Nokia was valued at $32.84 billion. Market cap is the stock market value of a company. It is the value of the company based on multiplying the share price of a company with the number of shares outstanding. HTC can attribute their success in the smartphone market through their operating system partnership with Google Android. However Nokia has a deal in the works with Microsoft for Windows Phone 7 smartphones. [SlashGear]

Sprint Announces HTC Evo View 4G


Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) has announced the HTC Evo View 4G tablet at CTIA 2011. The Evo View 4G 7-inch tablet has a 1024×600 display resolution. Other specs include 1.5GHz Qualcomm CPU, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal memory, microSD card slot, 5 megapixel HD camera, 1.3 megapixel font facing camera, 4G WiMax connectivity, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth 3.0. HTC Hires Shashi Fernando As Chief Content Officer


HTC has hired Shashi Fernando as the chief content officer of the company. Fernando was previously the Saffron Digital CEO. He will report directly to HTC CEO Peter Chou. “Shashi has tremendous experience in the content industry and I am excited to have him leading HTC’s content strategy,” stated Chou. “Content will continue to be a crucial part of our overall proposition and future success.” Saffron Digital was acquired by HTC in February.

Sprint Starts Selling Their First WP7 Phone: HTC Arrive


Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S) has started taking orders for the HTC Arrive, their first Windows Phone 7 device. The Arrive has is the first WP 7 phone to include an update with copy-and-paste function. The HTC Arrive has the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a slide-out keyboard, 5 megapixel camera, 720p HD camcorder, and weighs 6.5 ounces. You can buy the Arrive from Sprint and Microsoft stores for $199 with a two-year contract. Amazon is selling the Arrive for $49.99 with a contract. [InformationWeek]
