Mobile Payment Company Square Expands To Japan

Square, the mobile payments company, announced that they are expanding to Japan.  This means that Square is now available in three countries including the U.S. and Canada.  Square is being supported by the Sumitomo Mitsui Card Corporation, which is the same company that helped launch Visa in Japan.

Jelly Raises Funding From SV Angel, Spark Capital, And Several Angel Investors

Jelly is a startup that was founded by Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter.  The company is still in stealth mode and we have no idea what the company does.  Jelly has raised a Series A round of funding led by Spark Capital, SV Angel, Square CEO Jack Dorsey, LinkedIn CEO Reid Hoffman, Bono, Evan Williams, Jason Goldman, Al Gore, Greg Yaitanes, and Roya Mahboob.  Spark Capital general partner Bijan Sabet has joined the Jelly board of directors as part of the funding.

Twitter and Square Co-Founder Jack Dorsey Auctioning A Lunch On eBay

Jack Dorsey, the creator of Twitter and founding CEO of Square, has partnered with auction manager Kompolt to set up a lunch meeting at Square’s office in San Francisco that will benefit charity.  The auction started on May 6th and will end on May 16th.  There are around 3 days left with a current bid of about $5,000.  The auction will benefit the BUILD.org charity.  The auction winning bidder will be allowed to bring a total of eight people.

Twitter Hits 200 Million Active Users, Turns 7 Years Old

Twitter has announced that it has been seven years since Jack Dorsey sent out the first tweet (embedded below).  Twitter also posted a video that highlights real world events where Twitter played a major role like the plane landing on the Hudson River, protests in Egypt, the Japanese tsunami, the first tweet from outer space, and President Obama getting the most retweets during his re-election.

Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone Receive Patent For Twitter

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has given Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone a patent for Twitter.  The patent lists Dorsey and Stone as inventors of the “device independent message distribution platform.”  The patent request was filed in 2007.  The patent essentially will allow Twitter a strong litigation defense against companies that they believe are infringing on their service.

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jack Dorsey Release Short Movie About The Importance Of Learning How To Program

Bill Gates (Microsoft chairman), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO), and Jack Dorsey (Twitter CEO/Square CEO) has made a short video about a nonprofit focused on making programming classes more widely available in schools.  The video promotes the non-profit Codes.org, an organization founded by Hadi Partovi.  Only a few schools offer programming classes and this organization aims to fix this issue.

Square Is Now Processing $10 Billion Annually With 40,000 Retail Partners

Square is a mobile payment service that is led by Jack Dorsey, one of the co-founders of Twitter.  Square is growing at a rapid pace and they are ending 2012 with a bang.  Square is ending 2012 with $341 million in funding and they are processing around $10 billion per year.  Square’s mobile card reader is now being used by over 40,000 retailers.  However Square’s competition is increasing at a rapid pace.  Other mobile credit card readers that entered the market include PayPal Here, Intuit GoPayment Reader, iZettle, and Google Wallet.
