Katie Couric Interviews Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone [VIDEO]

CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric has interview Twitter co-founder Biz Stone during a live “webshow” earlier this week. Couric asked Stone why they decided to have 140 characters and why they rejected Facebook’s offer. One thing I did not like about the video is how Couric called mobile payments “boring” when talking about Jack Dorsey’s business. Check out the video below:

Twitter To Be Available In Chinese In “A Matter of Time”

Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei asked Twitter creator Jack Dorsey “Is it possible to provide a Chinese access on Twitter?” He followed that up by saying “I need a clear answer, yes or no.” Dorsey said “I would say yes. It’s just a matter of time” at a panel discussion on social media. Dorsey participated over teleconference.

Ai is frustrated with Internet limitations in China. “In China, we cannot see YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter, and very soon, maybe not see Google,” stated Ai. “Basically it is society that forbids any flow of information and freedom of speech.”

Dorsey said that Twitter is working on language translation but getting the service to work through China’s firewall will be tough. Ai’s art work has been seen around the world. He also was a design consultant for the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. [PCWorld]

VeriFone Announces iPhone Solution For Credit Card Payments, Challenges Jack Dorsey’s Square

verifone-iphone-ss1
Square launched a little over a week ago and was valuated at $40 million. Square was created by Twitter co-founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey. Now Dorsey already has a competitor: VeriFone Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:PAY).

VeriFone is designing a hardware and software solution through the iPhone to accept credit card payments. The solution accepts physical credit cards. VeriFone’s solution will be called Payware Mobile.

“Banks and processors are concerned about the security issues of unapproved merchants using unregulated software and insecure fobs to accept card payments…PAYware Mobile leverages VeriFone’s proven payment and security expertise to provide the ultimate in end-to-end protection against payment fraud and misuse on an open and unregulated platform such as the iPhone,” stated VeriFone CEO Douglas Bergeron.

However VeriFone requires a merchant account. Square doesn’t. Square users already have an advantage because paying for a merchant account every month is not cheap.

Square Launches Today and Is Valuated At $40 Million

square-logo
Square is a new mobile payment service that was founded by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey. Dorsey is best known for being a co-founder of Twitter too. Before the company started, Square raised $10 million in funding with a $40 million valuation. The lead investor of the $10 million funding round was provided by Khosla Ventures. This is former Facebook CFO Gideon Yu’s first major investment since joining Khosla in late August.

Square will allow businesses to accept credit card payments without contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs. Square also has photo verification of the credit card holder. The company also has a device with a chip in the form of an audio input jack that can act as a way to accept payments. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are already on board with Square.

Celebrity and power Twitter user Alyssa Milano of Who’s The Boss fame (pictured below) is also serving as an adviser to Square. Other advisers include Susan Wu (Ohai.com), Ted Wang (Twitter lawyer), Ryan Gilbert (Payment services entrepreneur and EIR at Venrock), Greg Kidd (Twitter angel investor), and Jeremy LaTrasse (Twitter Head of Ops).

Jack Dorsey Reportedly Working On iPhone Credit Card Project

square-iphone
Jack Dorsey is the creator, co-founder, and chairman of Twitter. He had actually built the Twitter service in about 2 weeks. Now he is working on a new project and a source with Engadget has found out what it was. Dorsey is supposedly working on an iPhone and iPod Touch application that uses a dongle for being able to process credit cards. This allows anyone to accept credit card payments on the spot.

The venture has been given the code name “Squirrel.” In the screenshots that Engadget has about the Square system application, there is a domain name on the receipt called squareup.com. After doing a domain name WHOIS search on Squareup.com, there is a registered office in San Francisco listed. And the contact e-mail address is “billing@paybysquirrel.com.”
