The Former Microsoft Courier Team Has Launched A Company Called FiftyThree

This past January, a new startup launched called FiftyThree that is running out of New York. FiftyThree is a five-man operation and their first product is called Paper. Paper is a drawing app for the iPad that has brushes, writing tools, etc. The app allows you to keep digital sketchbooks and create paintings. The basic app is free and there are in-app purchases for $1.99 each. The team working on Paper also worked on the Microsoft Courier tablet before that project was scrapped. The team include Andrew Allen (filmmaker), Jon Harris (Designer), Julian Walker (Developer), John Ikeda (Hardware), and Georg Petschnigg (CEO). [The Verge]
Microsoft Submitting Proposal For Faster Internet

Microsoft is submitting a proposal for making a faster Internet protocol to the standards body known for creating HTTP 2.0. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is meeting this week to discuss the future of HTTP. HTTP 2.0 is on their agenda.

Microsoft and Financial Partners Take Down Zeus Botnets

Microsoft and their financial service partners have seized two command-and-control servers for the Zeus botnets, which are used for keylogging and accessing sensitive information. Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit and several of their financial-services partners coordinated with each other against Zeus botnets on March 23rd. They shut down command-and-control servers in Illinois and Pennsylvania.

“Smoked By Windows Phone” Campaign Happening At Microsoft Retail Stores This Weekend

This weekend at Microsoft’s retail stores, they are holding a campaign called “Smoked by Windows Phone.” Visitors in a Microsoft Store between 9AM and 10PM local time can challenge Microsoft to a Windows Phone speed test. Winners will be able to walk away with a Hunger Games Special Edition PC, but losers will be given the opportunity to swap their smartphone for a Windows Phone. Ten prizes will be given out per day. Microsoft will take modern smartphones like BlackBerrys, iPhones, Androids, etc. Visitors will not have to hand their phone over at the end of the challenge if they don’t want to. [The Verge]
Angry Birds Space Skips Windows Phone

“Angry Birds Space” will not be available on the Microsoft Windows Phone application store. Some analysts are taking Rovio’s decision to avoid the Windows Phone as how successful they believe that platform is.

Microsoft Rumored To Start Shipping Windows 8 In October

Microsoft Corporation is believed to be finishing Windows 8 this summer. This means that Windows 8 will most likely go on sale around October according to sources with Bloomberg. The rollout will include devices that run on Intel and ARM chips. Meeting the summer deadline is crucial for Microsoft otherwise they would be stuck being unable to ship anything in 2012. FTC Subpoenas Apple Over Why Google Is Their Default Search Engine

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has subpoenaed Apple as part of their antitrust probe of Google. They are seeking information about why Apple has incorporated Google as the default search engine on the iPhone and iPad. The FTC is requesting for documents that includes agreements made between Google and Apple according to sources with Bloomberg. Microsoft believes that this deal is considered anticompetitive.

Microsoft Manager James Whittaker Explains Why He Left Google

James Whittaker was an Engineering Director at Google before he left to rejoin Microsoft as a Partner Development Manager. Before working at these companies, he was a professor of computer science at Florida Institute of Technology and he was a consultant at IBM. Whittaker said that when he worked at Google, the time there was fun. He had become passionate about the company when he worked there and was able to keynote 4 Google Developer Day events and two Google Test Automation Conferences.

Microsoft Unveils Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Today Microsoft has officially announced the consumer preview of Windows 8. Microsoft has also released Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 5. You can find the OS preview at preview.windows.com. Microsoft had showcased Windows 8 preview in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress where Microsoft is heavily marketing the Windows Phone platform. “Our goal with Windows 8 is to deliver PCs without compromise,” stated Windows head Steven Sinofsky when he took the stage at MWC.
