Microsoft is partnering with Toshiba on a small screen tablet with a low price. Microsoft and Toshiba announced the Encore Mini at the IFA conference in Berlin. The Encore Mini is a 7-inch Windows powered tablet and is a smaller version of the 10-inch Encore 2 tablet released earlier this year.
Samsung has announced a new smartphone called the Note Edge. The Note Edge has a 5.6-inch display with a curved right side. The Note Edge has adopted glass with enhanced strength to cover the curved display. The curved side of the Note Edge can display text messages and menu icons. The curved display operates independently when the 5.6-inch display is turned off. The Note Edge will be released in a small number of countries. The Note Edge will cost over one million won (around $982).
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has agreed to refund at least $19 million to parents and consumers whose kids unknowingly made expensive in-app purchases for apps. This is the second major settlement that the FTC made with a large tech company over in-app purchases. Apple agreed to pay $32.5 million in January to in-app purchasers.
The Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Android app has hit 1 billion downloads on Android. That means that it is the first non-Google app to hit 1 billion downloads on Google Play. The Facebook Android app beat several individual Google apps like Chrome, Hangouts, and Google Search. Some of Google’s Android apps that surpassed 1 billion downloads include Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube.
Samsung Mobile’s official U.K. YouTube page has posted a video of the Samsung Galaxy S5 taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. What a clever way to show that the Galaxy S5 is waterproof. However, the S5 has challenged the iPhone 5s, the HTC One M8 and the Nokia Lumia 930 to take the same challenge.
Apple releases a small number of products that run on iOS, but Google Android is open source. Hundreds of manufacturers have built Android devices. Apparently, there are nearly 19,000 Android devices, according to OpenSignal.
