Nintendo Co., Ltd (7974): Third party publishers should return as the Wii U sees more sales

Nintendo Co., Ltd (TYO:7974) is hoping that first-party system sellers will help encourage third-party support for the Wii U ecosystem. At E3 this year, Nintendo had an impressive lineup of Wii U titles that was created by the company’s internal studios. Nintendo of America Senior Director of Communication Charlie Scibetta said that outside publishers will come back to the Wii U as the sales increase in the future, according to an interview with Ars Technica.

Nintendo Co., Ltd (7974) announces Amiibo, NFC figurines that can be used as player characters

Nintendo Co., Ltd (TYO:7974) announced a new type of product today called Amiibo, which are figurines that have an NFC chip and can be used in compatible games using a Wii U controller. During a presentation, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime referred to Amiibo is a “toys to life category.” Disney Infinity and the Skylanders Trap Team also have special NFC features for the Wii U gamepad that lets the figurines “come to life” in compatible games.

Nintendo shifts European headquarters to Frankfurt

Nintendo is shutting down its warehouse and office in Großostheim, Germany and is laying off around 30 workers. Some of the jobs that will be cut will include its office in Frankfurt. Frankfurt will replace Großostheim as the Nintendo’s European headquarters.

Nintendo is launching a smartphone service along with Mario Kart 8

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced that the company will be launching its first smartphone service along with the launch of Mario Kart 8 at the end of May. The service is code-named “Mario Kart TV” and it will allow users watch official and user-generated videos of the game through desktop browsers and mobile devices.

Nintendo Co., Ltd (7974) lost $229 million for its fiscal year

Sorry Nintendo Co., Ltd (TYO:7974), but the profits are in another castle. Nintendo saw an operating loss and net loss for its fiscal year that ended on March 31st. The sales of the Wii U have been dismal at only 6.17 million console sales since launching in November 2013, including 310,000 sold in the most recent quarter.

Nintendo Direct highlights Mario Kart 8 [Video]


Nintendo Direct has published a 36-minute video about Mario Kart 8, which is arriving on the Wii U on May 30th. The Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle is similar to the Mario & Luigi themed bundlers that were announced for the U.K. The $330 package bundles the game with the 32GB black Wii, red Wii U wheel, and Mario Wii Remote Plus. All copies of Mario Kart 8 comes with a free download code for one of four Wii U games.

Nintendo Game Boy turns 25 years old

Nintendo released the original Game Boy in Japan on April 21, 1989. The Game Boy looked like a brick and used black and gray pixels on a green background. What made the Game Boy interesting was that it was one of the first portable gaming consoles to spark an interest with a massive audience. The button arrangement looked just like a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controller.

Nintendo Wii U sales are down 36% so execs are taking a pay cut

Nintendo released their Q3 fiscal earnings report and the outlook is not stellar. The company reported an operating loss of $15 million over the 9 month period ending December 31, 2013. Revenues hit $4.8 billion, which is down 8.1% from the same period last year.
