RUMOR: IBM Interested In RIM’s Enterprise Division

Yesterday I wrote about how Samsung is not interested in licensing RIM, but apparently IBM in purchasing RIM in some form.  According to sources with Bloomberg, IBM has “made an informal approach” to buy RIM’s Enterprise Services unit.  RIM held off because they want to wait and see what happens with BlackBerry 10.  I don’t know whether this was a smart move or not because RIM seems to be putting all of their eggs in one basket.  There is also a chance that IBM will not give an offer like this again.

Samsung Denies That They Will License BB10

Earlier this month, we wrote about how RIM CEO Thorstein Heins said that the company is exploring licensing agreements with companies like Samsung and Sony.  Samsung is not having it because a company spokesperson told AllThingsD: “Samsung Electronics has not considered the acquisition of Research In Motion or licensing BB10.”  Well, at least RIM successfully appealed that $147 million patent lawsuit and Sony has not denied the talks based on what I’ve heard.

RIM has been able to successfully appeal a patent infringement verdict against Mformation.  RIM would have been forced to pay $147.2 million if the appeal did not happen.  Mformation filed a lawsuit against RIM for violation of a remote management patent and a jury sided with them.  However a judge in California has overturned the decision upon reexamination of the evidence.  Below is a press release about the lawsuit appeal:

RIM To Potentially License BB10 To Samsung and Sony

Research In Motion will be releasing the BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system in 2012.  RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that RIM will be exploring licensing agreements with companies like Samsung and Sony according to Telegraph UK.  This could definitely help increase BlackBerry’s market share.

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Has A Siri-Like Feature

n4bbdotcom has uploaded a video with a demo of BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha.  It turns out that the operating system has a Siri-like feature.  The feature has a voice command function with an operator whose voice is actually very similar to Siri.  Check out the video blew to see BlackBerry’s voice command in action.

Judge Hits RIM With $147.2 Million Penalty In Patent Litigation

A judge in northern California has ordered Research In Motion (RIM) to pay $147.2 million as a penalty over patent litigation regarding a remote management system for wireless devices.  Mformation Technologies Inc. was the plaintiff in this case.  The verdict was reported on Friday at a federal court in San Francisco.

RIM Selling A Corporate Jet As Part Of Effort To Save $1 Billion In Operating Costs

Research In Motion is expected to be selling one of their corporate jets in an effort to save money according to Bloomberg.  RIM is hoping to sell the jet for around $6-$7 million in an effort to save $1 billion in operating costs on an annual basis.  Fortunately the executives will have one other private jet to fly around the world.

RIM CEO Hints At BB10 Coming In January

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins was interviewed by CIO.com and was asked about why BlackBerry 10.  As you may know, BlackBerry 10 is now scheduled to arrive in Q1 or 2013.  The reason for the delay was because software developers have been putting a large amount of code in the platform.  This “has proven to be more time consuming than anticipated.”
