The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that it has settled charges with Snapchat about deceiving users. The FTC said that Snapchat promised users that photo messages “disappeared,” but that was “false.” The FTC alleges that Snapchat collected address book information without consenting users. The app also allegedly allowed video messages to be stored and accessed on a recipient’s phone. And the FTC claims Snapchat failed to secure its “Find Friends” feature, which resulted in a security breach that affected over 4 million users’ accounts. Snapchat will have to set up an in-depth privacy program and it will be monitored by a privacy professional for 20 years.

Last November, Snapchat said that 400 million photo messages were being sent per day and it was rumored that it turned down a multibillion dollar offer from Facebook. This is up from 60 million messages per day in February 2013. Snapchat Stories, Snapchat videos that are a collection of photo messages and lasts for 24 hours, are viewed 500 million times per day.
