- Next-generation air travel company Aero announced that it raised $16 million in funding. Here is how the company works.
Aero — a San Francisco-based next-generation air travel company that is building seamless way to travel to the best leisure destinations in the world — announced it has raised $16 million in funding to date. And Aero also revealed that it hired Uma Subramanian as the CEO of the company back in March.
“Based on Aero’s past market test successes, we have a very clear vision of where we want to take the company going forward. Uma’s deep industry knowledge is exactly what was needed to bring this vision to life and push the company forward,” said Garrett Camp — who helped launch the startup. “Now we want to get out of the way and let her and her team work their magic.”
Camp is also known as being a co-founder at Uber and the founder of Expa. Before that, Camp was a founder of StumbleUpon which was acquired by eBay.
Subramanian had joined Aero from Airbus. While at Airbus, Subramanian launched Voom — which is an urban air mobility service operating helicopters in some of the world’s densest cities. Within the aerospace and technology space, Subramanian has 20 years of experience.
“I am super excited to be leading the Aero team to bring to life our vision of ushering in a new golden age of air travel,” Subramanian explained. “I believe that flying should be a magical experience – not just getting from A to B, but rather an experience to be savored and shared. We want to be the premier air carrier for the experience economy.”
Subramanian is rapidly expanding on her team by adding key advisors and executives from Virgin America and Virgin Atlantic. And Subramanian is also expanding on the company design team with leaders from IDEO to contribute to building Aero’s holistic end-to-end experiences.
While under Subramanian’s leadership, Aero ran a series of successful marketing tests including a summer trial where Aero partnered with a European air carrier to offer flights between Mykonos and Ibiza — which is the first nonstop service between the two locations.
And more than 80% of the bookings on the Mykonos-Ibiza route were purchased from mobile devices. Plus the company is also planning to build the first ever mobile-first booking, ticketing, and boarding pass system. The upcoming premium destinations for the air travel company include Telluride and La Paz. And they will begin selling tickets to these destinations next month.
