Akamai Technologies has announced an $11.6 billion contractual commitment over seven years with Anthropic to support growing demand for CPU computing capacity. Anthropic will use Akamai Cloud’s distributed infrastructure and software to run AI workloads at scale.
The companies could expand the relationship by up to an additional $9 billion, bringing its total potential value to approximately $20 billion. That additional amount depends on future purchases at mutually agreed terms.
As part of the agreement, Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant to purchase nonvoting convertible preferred stock equivalent to 7.7 million Akamai common shares, or approximately 5% of common stock outstanding, on an as-converted basis. The exercise price is $111.33 per common share.
A portion representing approximately 2% of Akamai’s common stock outstanding is expected to vest in connection with the announced $11.6 billion commitment. The remaining approximately 3% would vest if the relationship expands: each additional $3 billion in cloud services purchases would trigger vesting of approximately 1%.
Akamai estimates that the $11.6 billion commitment will require approximately $5.5 billion in related capital expenditures. It expects no change to its 2026 revenue guidance, but anticipates approximately $1.7 billion in additional 2026 capital expenditures to secure and pre-purchase components, including memory.
The agreement adds to more than $2.8 billion in other multiyear Cloud Infrastructure Services commitments that Akamai said it previously announced across its customer base this year. Akamai Cloud spans computing infrastructure from centralized facilities to its distributed network of points of presence, which the company uses to deliver applications closer to users.
