Akamai Technologies: $205 Million Acquisition Of LayerX Advances AI Workforce Security Strategy

Akamai Technologies announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire LayerX for approximately $205 million, advancing its workforce security strategy with AI usage control capabilities.

The acquisition strengthens Akamai’s Zero Trust security portfolio by extending protection into the browser layer, where employees increasingly interact with generative AI applications, SaaS AI tools, and AI agents. LayerX specializes in browser-based AI usage control and secure enterprise browser technology designed to provide visibility and governance over how enterprise users engage with AI tools.

Unlike proprietary enterprise browsers that require organizations to adopt new browsers, LayerX supports widely used commercial browsers, allowing employees to continue using their preferred browser environments without disruption. The platform also supports emerging agentic browsers such as Atlas and Comet. The technology gives security teams real-time visibility and control over user interactions with web content, prompts, file uploads, and SaaS applications without requiring infrastructure changes.

Akamai said the acquisition addresses growing enterprise demand for AI usage control as organizations accelerate adoption of large language models and AI-powered applications. The company plans to integrate LayerX’s capabilities with its existing Zero Trust portfolio, which includes Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), runtime protection for AI applications, and workload-level segmentation of AI inference systems.

LayerX employees, including co-founders Or Eshed and David Vaisbrud, will join Akamai’s Zero Trust organization following the transaction. The acquisition also expands Akamai’s cybersecurity presence in Tel Aviv, marking the company’s fourth cybersecurity acquisition in the region over the past five years.

The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Akamai said the acquisition is expected to dilute its non-GAAP earnings per share by approximately $0.12 for fiscal year 2026. LayerX is projected to generate annual recurring revenue of approximately $10 million by the end of 2026.

KEY QUOTES:

“Our customers are adopting AI at record speed, and they’re telling us the same thing: Their existing controls cannot see how employees are interacting with AI tools and sharing with large language models. The acquisition of LayerX helps close that gap, providing Akamai with a control layer that governs AI at the point of use so enterprises can move at AI speed without compromising safety and compliance.”

Mani Sundaram, Executive Vice President And General Manager, Security Technology Group, Akamai Technologies

“Securing human and agentic AI usage has become one of the defining challenges in enterprise security. We’re giving enterprises the foundation to deploy AI safely at a global scale by bringing LayerX’s technology together with Akamai’s Zero Trust portfolio and the world’s most distributed edge platform. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to accelerate our security vision through this deal.”
