Alcoa Announces $65 Million Investment At Norway’s Mosjøen Smelter To Add Recycled Aluminum Capabilities

Alcoa has announced a $65 million capital investment at its Mosjøen smelter in Norway to expand foundry production capabilities and incorporate post-consumer recycled aluminum into its casting process for the first time. The investment will expand and upgrade the Mosjøen casthouse, increasing production capacity by up to 75,000 metric tons through a new open mold foundry casting line, melting furnaces, and additional casthouse improvements.

The upgrade responds to evolving customer requirements in the automotive and packaging sectors, where demand for recycled-content aluminum products is growing alongside broader expectations for low-carbon materials. The expanded facility will offer greater flexibility in ingot size and format, a broader foundry alloy portfolio, expanded alloy diversity, and enhanced recycled content capabilities — strengthening Alcoa’s competitive position across the European market. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with commissioning and ramp-up scheduled to progress throughout 2028.

Mosjøen is one of the largest industrial employers in Northern Norway, with more than 700 direct employees and a significant regional impact across the Helgeland region. Since 2020, Alcoa has invested approximately $180 million in sustaining and return-seeking capital projects at the smelter, making the latest $65 million commitment part of a sustained multi-year investment program at the site. Alcoa is a global industry leader in bauxite, alumina, and aluminum products, and is listed on both the NYSE and ASX.
