AllTrails, a popular app for hiking enthusiasts, has raised $75 million in funding led by Spectrum Equity, according to TechCrunch. AllTrails participated in AngelPad’s inaugural accelerator class. This is AllTrails’ first major round of funding following a small round of funding several years ago from 2020 Ventures and 500 Startups.

And AllTrails allows users to search 50,000 trails and read reviews, see photos, and look over maps curated by millions of hikers, campers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers across more than 100 countries. The AllTrails app has been downloaded more than 12 million times. AllTrails was founded by Russell Cook in 2010 and it is currently being led by CEO Jade Van Doren.

“I grew up camping in the Sierras with my grandfather and backpacking up there,” said Van Doren via TechCrunch. “I looked around the space and it felt like there was a lot of room to build something meaningful that would help people find places to get outdoors and feel safe once they are out there.”

Cook said that the company is cash flow positive and it was not seeking venture capital when Spectrum approached the company. And Cook cited Spectrum has expertise in the consumer space such as Ancestry and WeddingWire will be a value-add for the company.

“I got really excited about doing that and we’ve made a lot of progress toward those goals,” added Van Doren. “I enjoy waking up in the morning and knowing what we are building is helping people live healthier and more active lifestyles.”

With this round of funding, AllTrails will be expanding overseas and the company will use the funding to hire aggressively. In conjunction with the funding Spectrum’s Ben Spero and Matt Neidlinger will be joining AllTrails’ board of directors.
