  • Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced it has confirmed Wondery. These are the details.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced it has confirmed Wondery, which is a podcast company known for producing hits like “Business Wars,” “Dr. Death,” and “The Shrink Next Door.”

The deal was valued at $300 million, according to sources from The New York Times. And it was reported that Apple was also seeking a deal with Wondery before the deal with Amazon went through. Wondery is also working on a slate of original TV shows based on its podcasts.

Over the past couple of years, the podcast market has been heating up largely driven by the shelter-in-place orders associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Spotify acquired companies like Loudr, Gimlet Media, Anchor FM, Parcast, SoundBetter, The Ringer, and Megaphone over the past couple of years and they also struck exclusive deals for podcast content from renowned celebrities and politicians.

Wondery founder Hernan Lopez was previously an executive at Fox. And he will step down as CEO of the company following the closing of the deal with Amazon. Wondery’s chief operating officer Jen Sargent will oversee the company going forward.
