Amazon: Supply Chain Services Platform Launched For Businesses Beyond Amazon Marketplace

Amazon announced the launch of Amazon Supply Chain Services (ASCS), opening the company’s logistics infrastructure and fulfillment network to businesses of all sizes and industries beyond sellers on the Amazon marketplace.

The new offering gives businesses access to Amazon’s freight transportation, distribution, fulfillment, warehousing, and parcel shipping capabilities through a unified logistics platform. According to Amazon, the initiative extends the same supply chain infrastructure that supports Amazon and its third-party sellers to sectors including healthcare, automotive, manufacturing, and retail.

Amazon said hundreds of thousands of sellers have already used its logistics network over the past three years to move, store, and deliver hundreds of millions of packages across third-party warehouses, facilities, and sales channels outside the Amazon store.

The company compared the launch of ASCS to the evolution of Amazon Web Services, which originated from the infrastructure Amazon initially built to support its own operations before expanding into a global cloud computing platform.

Amazon said leading companies already using ASCS include Procter & Gamble, 3M, Lands’ End, and American Eagle Outfitters. The companies are using Amazon’s infrastructure for transportation of raw materials, inventory positioning, global distribution, and direct-to-consumer parcel delivery.

According to Amazon, the service includes freight transportation across ocean, air, rail, and ground shipping; distribution and fulfillment capabilities that position inventory closer to customer demand; and parcel shipping with two-to-five-day delivery windows and seven-day-a-week operations.

Amazon also highlighted the benefits its integrated logistics network has provided sellers through Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). Since 2006, independent sellers have shipped more than 80 billion units using FBA, while sellers utilizing Amazon’s end-to-end logistics solutions have experienced nearly 20% higher sales, according to the company.

Businesses can now access ASCS through a centralized management console that enables customers to select and manage logistics services across the supply chain.
