Amazon announced that it has begun using Japan’s iconic Shinkansen bullet trains to transport packages between its facilities, a move designed to shorten delivery times while reducing carbon emissions across its transportation network.
The initiative leverages non-passenger space on three high-speed rail routes: the Tohoku Shinkansen, the Tohoku–Hokkaido Shinkansen, and the Hokuriku Shinkansen. These routes connect Amazon operations in the Greater Tokyo area with central and northern regions of Japan, including Hakodate, Aomori, and Kanazawa.
According to Amazon, the program is being carried out in cooperation with Japan Railway companies JR East, JR Hokkaido, and JR West. By utilizing available cargo capacity within existing rail infrastructure, Amazon aims to improve operational efficiency while supporting its broader sustainability goals.
The company noted that the Shinkansen network, which travels at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour and is known for its punctuality, enables faster and more reliable package transportation. Amazon also expects the initiative to lower CO₂ emissions compared with traditional long-haul road transportation used in the line-haul segment between cities.
The package delivery system began operations in March 2026 on the Tohoku and Tohoku–Hokkaido Shinkansen routes and expanded to the Hokuriku Shinkansen in May 2026.
Amazon said the project is part of a broader effort to explore innovative transportation methods around the world that can improve delivery speed, efficiency, and sustainability. The company already employs a variety of alternative delivery methods globally, including e-cargo bikes, drones, boats, and horse-drawn carriages in locations where conventional transportation options are limited.
