Amca Acquires Payne Magnetics To Expand Power Electronics Capabilities

Amca, a Los Angeles-based aerospace and defense company, announced that it has acquired Payne Magnetics of Covina, California, from its second-generation owner, Jon Payne. The transaction strengthens Amca’s push into critical power electronics and expands its portfolio of legacy aerospace suppliers focused on reducing supply chain risk across the industry.

The acquisition follows Amca’s recent purchase of Electrocube, its first deal in the power electronics sector. Electrocube is known for delivering foil-wound transformers used across dozens of applications on nearly every Boeing aircraft. With the addition of Payne Magnetics, Amca significantly broadens its power electronics capabilities and positions itself to offer one of the industry’s widest ranges of power solutions tailored to emerging defense system requirements.

Founded in the 1950s by George Payne during the post-war aerospace expansion, Payne Magnetics has become a longstanding supplier of premium magnetic components for aerospace systems. George Payne’s expertise in RF technology and the company’s long-standing integration of design and manufacturing enabled the development of some of the industry’s smallest and lightest components.

That engineering approach helped Payne Magnetics secure placements on major commercial and defense platforms, including the 737 MAX, as well as on mission-critical military aircraft programs such as the F-16 and F-18.

Amca said the acquisition ensures that Payne Magnetics’ highly specialized engineering and manufacturing expertise will continue within the aerospace and defense industrial base. The company’s engineering team plans to work closely with Jon Payne and the existing team to transfer institutional knowledge and develop new product variants. These will support both rapidly evolving defense applications, such as UAVs and energetics systems, and legacy platforms where existing alternatives face long lead times or quality concerns.

The combined Amca and Payne Magnetics team said it is welcoming new customer requests and aims to respond within 24 hours.

“Not only was Amca the only acquirer focused on keeping decades of our aerospace magnetics expertise alive, but they also had the ambition to supercharge our capabilities for the industry’s changing needs. I’m looking forward to helping them realize their vision as the third-generation owners of this company.”
