AMD And Anthropic Partner On 2-Gigawatt AI Infrastructure Deployment And Up To $5 Billion Investment

AMD and Anthropic have entered into a strategic partnership involving the planned deployment of up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct graphics processing units and a potential equity investment of as much as $5 billion in Anthropic.

Anthropic plans to deploy AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs through AMD Helios rack-scale systems. Deployment of the first gigawatt is expected to begin during the first half of 2027.

A gigawatt measures electrical power rather than the number of processors being purchased. Deployments at this scale generally represent large data center infrastructure projects requiring substantial computing, networking, cooling and energy capacity.

Anthropic will use systems featuring AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, AMD EPYC “Venice” central processing units, AMD Pensando networking technology and AMD’s ROCm software platform.

The infrastructure will support the training and operation of Claude models as Anthropic increases computing capacity to meet customer demand. The deployment builds on the company’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs.

AMD Helios is a rack-scale architecture that combines processors, networking and software into integrated systems designed for advanced AI workloads. The platform is intended to support both training, in which models learn from large datasets, and inference, in which trained models generate responses for users and applications.

The two companies are also launching a multiyear engineering collaboration. Anthropic and AMD plan to use Claude to optimize workloads running on AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate development of AMD’s ROCm software.

ROCm is AMD’s open software platform for developing and operating high-performance computing and AI applications on its processors. Improving the platform’s software tools, libraries and workload compatibility is an important part of AMD’s effort to compete for large-scale AI deployments.

AMD will also deploy Claude more broadly across its engineering and product development organizations. The companies expect the technology to support software development, product design and other internal workflows.

The partnership gives Anthropic access to a more diversified portfolio of AI computing hardware. Using multiple processor platforms may help the company match different workloads with appropriate systems while reducing dependence on a single infrastructure provider.

For AMD, the agreement represents a major potential deployment of its next-generation AI accelerators and strengthens its position in the expanding market for data center systems supporting frontier AI models.

AMD has separately committed to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic in the future. The companies did not disclose the timing, structure, valuation or conditions associated with the potential investment.

The announced GPU deployment and equity investment remain forward-looking commitments. Their eventual size and timing will depend on infrastructure development, product availability, manufacturing capacity, regulatory considerations and the companies’ continued execution.
