AMD And OpenAI Sign Strategic Partnership

By Amit Chowdhry ● Oct 7, 2025

AMD and OpenAI have entered into a significant agreement involving the deployment of 6 gigawatts of power to support OpenAI’s next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure. This collaboration will utilize multiple generations of AMD Instinct GPUs, starting with the introduction of the AMI Instinct MI450 GPUs, which are scheduled to begin deployment in the second half of 2026.

This partnership highlights the strengths of both companies: AMD is recognized for its leadership in high-performance computing systems, while OpenAI is at the forefront of generative AI research and technological advancements. By working together, they aim to pave the way for innovation in AI during this pivotal time.

As part of this agreement, OpenAI will count on AMD as a core strategic computing partner. The focus will be on driving large-scale deployments of AMD technologies, starting with the MI450 series and expanding to future generations of GPUs.

The two companies will share their expertise to align their product roadmaps, strengthening their collaboration that began with earlier models, including the MI300X and MI350X series. This close partnership is expected to yield a variety of benefits, enabling extensive AI deployments and significantly advancing the broader technology ecosystem.

To further align their long-term strategic interests, AMD has issued a warrant to OpenAI for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. This stock will vest as specific milestones are met, with the first tranche linked to the initial 1-gigawatt deployment. Additional tranches will be tied to the scaling up of power purchases to the full 6-gigawatt target.

The vesting process also hinges on AMD reaching certain share price targets and OpenAI accomplishing essential technical and commercial milestones needed for the large-scale deployment of AMD technologies.
