Amentum: $406 Million UK Small Modular Reactor Contract Secured For Nuclear Engineering Role

By Amit Chowdhry • Apr 1, 2026

Amentum has secured a $406 million contract as part of a joint venture with Cavendish Nuclear to serve as the owner’s engineer for the United Kingdom’s first small modular reactor program.

The contract, awarded by Great British Energy – Nuclear, will support the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR technology at the Wylfa site in North Wales. The agreement could run for up to 14 years and represents a key step in advancing the UK’s clean energy strategy and nuclear capabilities.

The Amentum-led joint venture, operating as Litmus Nuclear, will provide independent technical oversight and assurance across multiple phases of the project, including design, safety, engineering, construction, and commissioning. The work is intended to help the UK government reach a final investment decision on the SMR rollout while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Small modular reactors, designed to generate around 470 megawatts of electricity, are smaller and faster to deploy than traditional nuclear plants. The UK selected Wylfa as the site for its first SMR deployment in late 2025 as part of broader efforts to strengthen energy security and expand low-carbon power generation.

Amentum, headquartered in the United States, is deeply embedded in the UK nuclear sector. The company serves as a delivery partner for project and construction management at Hinkley Point C, acts as the sole program and project management partner for Sizewell C, and supports nuclear operations and decommissioning efforts across multiple sites, including Sellafield.
