Ameresco has completed a $7.8 million infrastructure upgrade project for Tacoma Public Schools, modernizing the HVAC system at McKinley Swing School to improve energy efficiency and create a more reliable learning environment.
The project focused on replacing an aging boiler system that had reached the end of its life with a modern HVAC system. The upgrade was carried out while maintaining the building’s historic integrity, requiring adherence to preservation guidelines. Construction was completed while portions of the school remained occupied, with coordination to ensure minimal disruption to students and staff. The project reached substantial completion on December 31, 2025.
In addition to energy improvements, the initiative supported local economic goals in Pierce County, including achieving 30 percent participation from local contractors and engagement with small and minority or women-owned business enterprises.
The work was delivered using a Progressive Design-Build model, which allows for collaborative development of project scope and cost during the design phase. This approach is increasingly used for infrastructure modernization projects, particularly where flexibility and cost management are critical.
The project builds on an ongoing partnership between Ameresco and Tacoma Public Schools, aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure while improving operational efficiency and sustainability outcomes.
