Apple has partnered with Leonardo DiCaprio, Laurene Powell Jobs, and the Ford Foundation to create a new fundraiser called the America’s Food Fund. This fundraiser has a goal of making sure that Americans have access to food during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The America’s Food Fund fundraiser launched on GoFundMe with $12 million in donations and a goal to hit $15 million, which would be distributed to the World Central Kitchen and Feeding America.
“We recognize that food insecurity in America is growing at a rapid pace. America’s Food Fund will launch with World Central Kitchen and Feeding America as its first two beneficiaries. As we continue to monitor and map food gaps, we will partner with additional organizations and businesses that are helping to meet the need,” says the description on GoFundMe.
World Central Kitchen is led by renowned chef and humanitarian Chef José Andrés. In a tweet, Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “Apple is proud to support Chef Jose Andres’s World Central Kitchen and Feeding America.”
The World Central Kitchen has been donating meals to passengers stuck on cruise ships. And now it is serving 100,000 meals daily across New York, Newark, Miami, LA, New Orleans, Little Rock, Oakland, and Washington, D.C.
The donations made through the campaign will go 100%to the organizations (except the 2.9% and $0.30 per donation transaction fee). Leonardo DiCaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs contributed $5 million to the fundraiser. Apple put in $5 million. And Oprah Winfrey and Ford Foundation donated $1 million each. Y Combinator co-founder donated $100,000 and angel investor Ron Conway donated $50,000.
