AMN Healthcare Acquires ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment Assets

AMN Healthcare announced that it has acquired the intellectual property, software, and methodology behind the ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment.

The ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment is a research-backed leadership assessment solution designed to support executive selection, leadership development, and succession planning in healthcare organizations.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

AMN said the acquisition strengthens its ability to help healthcare organizations evaluate leadership potential, map role-specific skills and competencies, and make more informed decisions for critical executive roles.

The ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment has been in operation for more than six years and has delivered more than 1,000 assessments. The solution is designed to provide structured behavioral insights into leadership potential, cultural alignment, and long-term success.

By bringing the capability in-house, AMN is expanding its leadership advisory services beyond executive search. The company said the acquisition will support target profile development, competency mapping, executive coaching, succession planning, and broader leadership ecosystem planning.

The ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment was developed under the leadership of Richard Metheny, an executive assessment and leadership consulting expert. Metheny will continue working with AMN as a strategic advisor to help integrate and apply the assessment across AMN’s leadership solutions business.

AMN said the acquisition comes as healthcare organizations face increasingly complex leadership challenges, including workforce shortages, financial pressures, operational transformation, and evolving patient care demands.

The company said the addition of the ESSENTIAL Leadership Assessment will help reduce subjectivity in leadership decisions while helping healthcare organizations build stronger leadership pipelines for the future.
