Anaconda Biomed, a medical technology company based in Barcelona, Spain, and Marin, California, has secured $56 million in financing led by Omega Funds, with participation from new investor Spain’s Co-investment Fund (FOCO), managed by COFIDES, and existing investors Asabys, Ysios Capital, and CDTI through its SICC Innvierte initiative. The financing will support the completion of the company’s ATHENA pivotal clinical trial, continued development of its neurovascular device portfolio, and efforts to secure additional regulatory approvals internationally.
Anaconda Biomed develops thrombectomy catheters designed to improve the treatment of ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to part of the brain.
Its technology focuses on patients experiencing large vessel occlusion, a particularly serious form of ischemic stroke in which a major blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked.
Mechanical thrombectomy is a procedure used to remove these blood clots and restore circulation. However, existing techniques can face challenges involving incomplete clot removal, clot fragmentation, and the movement of smaller clot fragments into other blood vessels.
Anaconda is developing its proprietary Funnel Catheter platform to address these challenges by combining aspiration with flow-arrest and flow-reversal capabilities.
The technology is designed to improve clot capture, reduce embolic complications, and maximize the restoration of blood flow to the brain.
Its funnel-based approach combines the aspiration capabilities associated with large-bore thrombectomy catheters with the flow-management benefits of balloon guide catheters.
By controlling blood flow during clot retrieval, the platform is intended to reduce the risk of smaller clot fragments traveling downstream and blocking additional blood vessels.
The company’s ultimate objective is to improve reperfusion, simplify clot retrieval, and reduce the number of device passes required during treatment.
A major priority for the new financing is the completion of ATHENA, Anaconda’s ongoing pivotal investigational device exemption study.
The prospective, randomized clinical trial is designed to enroll 327 patients and evaluate the safety and performance of the company’s ANA Funnel Catheter.
Results from ATHENA are expected to support Anaconda’s clinical and regulatory development strategy as it seeks to expand the availability of its technology.
The ANA Funnel Catheter remains an investigational device in the United States and is restricted to investigational use under U.S. law. However, the company’s ANA5 Funnel Catheter has received CE mark approval.
Anaconda is also developing a broader portfolio of neurovascular devices based on its core technology.
Its product lineup includes the ANA5, ANA6, and ANA8 Funnel Catheters, as well as the Conda stent retriever.
The company plans to introduce additional complementary products, including sheaths and guidewires, to support thrombectomy procedures and expand the potential clinical applications of its technology.
Beyond mechanical thrombectomy, Anaconda is pursuing opportunities involving aspiration-first stroke treatment and carotid interventions.
The financing comes as the company targets what it describes as a large and relatively underserved global market for stroke intervention.
According to Anaconda’s estimates, approximately 270,000 mechanical thrombectomy procedures will be performed worldwide in 2026, representing only a portion of the potential patient population that could benefit from the procedure.
The company believes advances in thrombectomy technology could improve treatment outcomes while expanding the range of patients who can receive intervention.
Anaconda has also established a manufacturing facility near Barcelona to support its product development and commercialization plans.
The facility gives the company direct control over key engineering and manufacturing processes, allowing its teams to refine device designs, accelerate product development, and expand production capabilities.
Anaconda is developing proprietary manufacturing processes associated with its Funnel Catheter platform, which it expects will support further innovation across its neurovascular product portfolio.
The $56 million financing provides additional resources as the company advances its pivotal clinical program, expands its manufacturing capabilities, and pursues the regulatory approvals needed to make its technology available in additional markets.
