Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has launched the a16z FDE Fellowship, an eight-week program designed for Forward-Deployed Engineers (FDEs) and Applied AI leaders who are helping enterprises implement AI technologies in real-world environments.
According to a16z, demand for forward-deployed engineers is accelerating as companies work to operationalize AI. However, experienced FDEs remain difficult to find because they are often embedded deeply within customer deployments and operate across a wide range of industries and use cases. The fellowship aims to create a community where these practitioners can exchange insights, share deployment strategies, and help shape the future of enterprise AI implementation.
The program will run for eight weeks beginning in July 2026. Participation is designed to be flexible and largely opt-in, allowing fellows to engage alongside their existing professional responsibilities. The fellowship will include networking opportunities, in-person dinner events in San Francisco, and potentially additional cities based on demand. Participants will also gain access to discussions focused on practical lessons learned from deploying AI systems in enterprise settings.
The inaugural cohort includes leaders from some of the most prominent AI and technology companies. Participants include executives and deployment leaders from organizations such as Decagon, ElevenLabs, Cursor, Harvey, Google, Snowflake, Hex, Ramp, Rippling, and OpenAI.
The launch is part of a broader effort by a16z to build specialized fellowship programs around emerging technology roles. In recent months, the firm has introduced similar fellowship initiatives focused on growth engineering, design engineering, and new media professionals as AI continues to reshape how companies build products and engage with customers.
KEY QUOTES:
“Today we’re introducing the a16z FDE Fellowship, an 8-week cohort for FDEs and Applied AI leaders at the forefront of deploying AI into real-world enterprises.
Demand for FDEs is growing rapidly as startups race to close the gap between what customers need and what AI agents can deliver. But best-in-class FDEs are rare and hard to reach.
We’re launching this fellowship to bring together the people at the center of this shift to share what’s working, level up, and define the future of forward-deployed engineering.”
