Anthropic announced the acquisition of Bun, the high-performance JavaScript runtime, following a major growth milestone for Claude Code, which surpassed a one billion dollar annualized revenue run rate just six months after its public debut. The move strengthens Anthropic’s position in enterprise AI and expands the technical foundation supporting its fast-growing developer ecosystem.
Claude Code, introduced in May 2025, has evolved from an internal engineering experiment into a widely adopted tool used by major global enterprises, including Netflix, Spotify, KPMG, L’Oreal, and Salesforce. Bun has played a meaningful role in this expansion by helping scale Claude Code’s infrastructure and enabling higher performance in AI-driven software development.
Founded by Jarred Sumner in 2021, Bun has become known for its speed, reliability, and integrated toolchain, bringing together a runtime, package manager, bundler, and test runner. With more than 7 million monthly downloads and over 82,000 GitHub stars, it has rapidly become core infrastructure for companies such as Midjourney and Lovable.
Anthropic plans to keep Bun open source and MIT-licensed while deepening investment in its capabilities. The acquisition reflects the company’s strategy of pursuing technology-focused deals that enhance its enterprise AI platform and align with its mission. By integrating Bun more tightly into its engineering stack, Anthropic expects to improve performance, stability, and developer workflows within Claude Code as AI becomes more central to modern software development.
The Bun team’s long-standing collaboration with Anthropic includes foundational contributions to Claude Code’s architecture, including the recent launch of its native installer. Anthropic expects the combined expertise to accelerate platform innovation and support the next generation of software engineered with AI.
KEY QUOTES
“Bun represents exactly the kind of technical excellence we want to bring into Anthropic. Jarred and his team rethought the entire JavaScript toolchain from first principles while remaining focused on real use cases. Claude Code reached $1 billion in run-rate revenue in only 6 months, and bringing the Bun team into Anthropic means we can build the infrastructure to compound that momentum and keep pace with the exponential growth in AI adoption.”
Mike Krieger, Chief Product Officer of Anthropic
