Anthropic: Andrej Karpathy Joins To Focus On Frontier LLM R&D

Andrej Karpathy announced that he has joined Anthropic, signaling his return to frontier large language model research and development during what he described as a formative period for the industry.

Karpathy shared the update in a post on X, where he said: “I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative.” He also noted that he is “very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”

Karpathy is widely known for his work in artificial intelligence, including serving as Director of AI at Tesla and as a founding member and research scientist at OpenAI. More recently, he has focused heavily on AI education, building a large audience through technical tutorials, courses, and educational content related to neural networks and machine learning.

While joining Anthropic, Karpathy indicated that his education-focused initiatives will continue in the future, saying that he “remain[s] deeply passionate about education” and plans to resume that work over time.

Anthropic has continued expanding its research organization as competition intensifies among leading AI companies developing frontier LLM systems and agentic AI technologies.
