Anthropic announced a significant expansion of its collaboration with Google Cloud, providing access to unprecedented compute capacity for training and deploying future generations of its Claude AI models. The deal grants Anthropic access to up to 1 million Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips, marking its most significant TPU commitment to date and representing computing power valued at tens of billions of dollars. The total infrastructure will exceed 1 gigawatt of capacity, with capacity coming online in 2026.
This expanded partnership reinforces Anthropic’s strategic reliance on Google Cloud’s advanced AI infrastructure, including its seventh-generation TPU, Ironwood. TPUs are designed specifically for large-scale machine learning workloads, delivering performance, energy efficiency, and scalability. Anthropic cited these advantages as key factors in choosing TPUs to power its Claude family of foundation models.
Anthropic first partnered with Google Cloud in 2023 to utilize its AI infrastructure for model training and to distribute Claude models through Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and Google Cloud Marketplace. Thousands of enterprises—including Figma, Palo Alto Networks, and Cursor—currently rely on Claude through Google Cloud for a range of AI-powered applications.
The expanded access to TPUs will enable Anthropic to meet surging demand for its models across industries and ensure that its infrastructure can scale to support increasingly sophisticated AI systems. The collaboration is expected to further deepen Anthropic’s role as a frontier developer of AI models, while advancing Google Cloud’s position as a leading provider of specialized computing resources for large-scale AI workloads.
KEY QUOTES:
“Anthropic and Google have a longstanding partnership and this latest expansion will help us continue to grow the compute we need to define the frontier of AI. Our customers—from Fortune 500 companies to AI-native startups—depend on Claude for their most important work, and this expanded capacity ensures we can meet our exponentially growing demand while keeping our models at the cutting edge of the industry.”
—Krishna Rao, Chief Financial Officer, Anthropic
“Anthropic’s choice to significantly expand its usage of TPUs reflects the strong price-performance and efficiency its teams have seen with TPUs for several years. We are continuing to innovate and drive further efficiencies and increased capacity of our TPUs, building on our already mature AI accelerator portfolio, including our seventh generation TPU, Ironwood.”
—Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive Officer, Google Cloud
The expanded partnership highlights how cloud providers and AI developers are aligning at massive scale to meet the computational demands of next-generation AI models. With this agreement, Anthropic is poised to advance its Claude systems faster than ever, supported by one of the most powerful AI infrastructure backbones in the world.
