Anthropic has introduced Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its new Claude 5.5 family, delivering performance comparable to Claude Fable 5.1 across most tasks while costing 40% less to run than Claude Opus 5 on typical workloads. The company also reported more than 30% faster output generation and improvements in agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work. The launch is accompanied by increased usage limits for Claude’s paid subscription plans.

The new model represents Anthropic’s latest effort to improve the performance and economics of advanced AI systems. By reducing the computing resources required to serve Opus 5.5, the company aims to make sophisticated AI capabilities more accessible for developers, businesses, and individual users working on computationally demanding tasks.

According to Anthropic, Opus 5.5 delivers performance comparable to Claude Fable 5.1 for most tasks while requiring substantially less computing power than its predecessor. The company said its internal testing demonstrated that, at default settings, the new model costs 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads.

The improvements extend beyond operating costs. Anthropic reported that Opus 5.5 generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5, enabling users to complete complex assignments more quickly. The company also said the model delivers competitive performance at its default effort setting, frequently outperforming competing models operating at their highest settings.

Anthropic identified agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work as three areas in which Opus 5.5 represents a substantial improvement over Opus 5.

These capabilities are particularly relevant for developers and enterprises deploying AI agents to execute multistep workflows. Agentic coding allows AI systems to work on programming assignments with greater autonomy, while computer-use capabilities enable them to interact with software applications and complete tasks across different digital environments.

The company has also improved the model’s communication capabilities in response to user feedback. Opus 5.5 is designed to communicate more naturally, prioritize important information, and follow user-specified writing instructions more consistently.

These changes are intended to make longer conversations and complex working sessions easier to follow, particularly for users who rely on Claude for research, writing, document preparation, and other knowledge-intensive activities.

The release also marks an important milestone in Anthropic’s AI safety strategy. Opus 5.5 is the company’s first model released since it called for pacing the development of frontier AI systems.

As with previous Claude releases, the model underwent evaluations by external organizations, including METR and Frontier Design, before its launch. Anthropic reported that Opus 5.5 achieved its highest result to date on the company’s most comprehensive alignment assessment. These performance and safety results were reported by Anthropic.

Alongside the model launch, Anthropic announced increased five-hour usage limits for Claude Pro, Max, and Team subscribers. The company is also providing subscription users with a rate-limit reset that they can save and activate whenever they choose.

The changes are intended to give paying customers additional capacity for demanding workloads, extended conversations, and projects requiring substantial AI-generated output.

The combination of lower operating costs, faster output generation, improved autonomous capabilities, and expanded subscription usage represents Anthropic’s effort to make its latest frontier AI technology available for a broader range of professional and enterprise applications.

KEY QUOTES:

“Introducing Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in our new Claude 5.5 family. It performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 for most tasks, and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.”

“Opus 5.5 is our first model since we called for pacing the frontier. As with previous models, it was tested by external evaluators before release, including METR and Frontier Design. On our most comprehensive alignment test, it achieves the strongest score to date.”

“Opus 5.5 communicates more naturally, addressing some of the most common feedback we heard on Opus 5. It puts the most important information up front and follows the writing rules you give it, which makes long sessions easier to follow.”
