Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly planning to start selling Macs with its own processors starting next year, according to Bloomberg. The report states that Apple is working on 3 of its own Mac systems-on-a-chip that are based on the A14 processor that will be used in the next iPhone..

While there are multiple chips in development, Apple is aiming to have at least one Mac with its own chip starting next year. The chipset is reportedly code-named Kalamata internally.

Specifically, the chips will be built by Apple supplier TSMC and it will be based on the 5-nanometer architecture. This is the same design that is expected to be used for the next iPhone and iPad Pro.

Why is Apple going to use its own chips for Macs? Using these types of chips in Macs would provide Apple with greater control over the performance of devices and differentiate it from rivals. Plus using the same underlying technology between Macs and iOS devices could drive more app integration. And this would reduce Apple’s dependence on Intel’s supply chain and operations for chips.

The first Mac processors are expected to have eight high-performance cores. And four cores will be energy-efficient cores. Apple is also working on 12-core chips as well. This would be a huge jump because Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pros have four-core CPUs. These chipsets are expected to be Arm-based.
