Apple AirPods Pro Specifications: What You Should Know

By Amit Chowdhry • Oct 29, 2019

Apple recently announced the AirPods Pro, which has several features that make it more of a premium compared to the flagship AirPods.

Here is an overview of the Apple AirPods Pro specifications that you should know about.

New Design

The AirPods Pro features a new design, which makes it more lightweight and it was engineered for comfort and fit. Each of the earbuds come with 3 different sizes of soft and flexible silicone ear tips that conform to the contours of each individual ear thus providing a comfortable fit and a superior seal. This design is a critical factor in delivering immersive sound.

And to further maximize comfort, the AirPods Pro has an innovative vent system for equalizing pressure, which minimizes the discomfort common in other in-ear designs. Plus the AirPods Pro are sweat- and water-resistant.

Active Noise Cancellation

The Active Noise Cancellation feature on the AirPods Pro uses two microphones combined with advanced software to continuously adapt to each individual ear and headphone fit. And this feature removes background noise to provide a uniquely customized noise-canceling experience that allows a user to focus on what they’re listening to like a favorite song or a phone conversation.

The first microphone is outward-facing and detects external sound for analyzing environmental noise. And the AirPods Pro then creates an equivalent anti-noise that cancels out background noise before it reaches the listener’s ear. And a second inward-facing microphone listens toward the ear.

And the AirPods Pro cancels the remaining noise detected by the microphone. Noise cancellation continuously adapts the sound signal 200 times per second.

Immersive Sound

AirPods Pro features superior sound quality with Adaptive EQ. This means it automatically tunes the low- and mid-frequencies of the music to the shape of an individual’s ear resulting in an immersive listening experience.

There is a custom high dynamic range amplifier that produces clear sound while also extending battery life. And it powers a custom high-excursion and low-distortion speaker driver designed to optimize audio quality and remove background noise. The driver provides rich bass down to 20Hz and detailed mid- and high-frequency audio.

Transparency Mode

The Transparency mode feature provides users with an option to simultaneously listen to music while still hearing the environment around them such as traffic while you are out on a run or a train announcement during a morning commute.

And with the pressure-equalizing vent system and advanced software that leaves just the right amount of noise cancellation active, Transparency mode also ensures that a user’s own voice sounds natural while the audio continues playing.

You can switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes easily through a new force sensor on the stem. And the force sensor makes it easy to play, pause, or skip tracks. Or you can answer or hang up phone calls. Plus users can also press on the volume slider in Control Center on iPhone and iPad to control settings or on Apple Watch by tapping on the AirPlay icon while music is playing.

You can also tap on the volume slider in Control Center to make it easy to switch between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes.

Performance And “Hey Siri”

The performance of the AirPods Pro are made possible with a system-in-package (SiP) design with the Apple-designed H1 chip at its core. The H1 features 10 audio cores, which powers everything in the device from the sound to Siri.

The low audio processing latency of H1 enables real-time noise cancellation and delivers high-quality sound using adaptive technology. Plus it responds to hands-free “Hey Siri” requests all at once.

Battery Life

The AirPods Pro features the same battery life as AirPods with up to five hours of listening time. While in Active Noise Cancellation mode, AirPods Pro delivers up to four and a half hours of listening time and up to three and a half hours of talk time on a single charge.

With additional charges from the Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro delivers more than 24 hours of listening time or over 18 hours of talk time. You can charge the AirPods case on a Qi-certified charging mat or using the Lightning port while on the go.

Ear Tip Fit Test

The Ear Tip Fit Test ensures users get the best audio experience from AirPods Pro by testing the quality of the seal and identifying the best ear tip size for them. Once the  AirPods Pro is placed in each ear, advanced algorithms work together with the microphones in each AirPod for measuring the sound level in the ear and compare it to what is coming from the speaker driver.

In a few seconds, the algorithm detects whether the ear tip is the right size, whether it is a good fit, or if it should be adjusted to create a better seal.

Audio Sharing

The Audio Sharing feature allows users to listen to the same song or watch the same movie with a friend by bringing a second pair of AirPods close to the iPhone or iPad.

Announce Messages

The Announce Messages feature automatically and conveniently speaks incoming messages as soon it arrives. Or when on a phone call or sharing media via Audio Sharing, Siri knows not to interrupt.

Pricing/Availability

The AirPods Pro are priced at $249 and are available to order from apple.com and in the Apple Store app in the US and over 25 other countries and regions.
