Apple (AAPL) Is Buying Virtual Reality Event Company NextVR

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) confirmed it is buying NextVR, which is a company that provides sports and event content for virtual reality headsets. This acquisition could potentially enable Apple’s rumored development of virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. NextVR is used by Facebook’s Oculus subsidiary along with Sony, HTC, and Lenovo.

NextVR specializes in live streaming virtual reality. And NextVR also has deals in place with the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment, and Fox Sports. And NextVR also has 

NextVR said that it is shutting down this week. And the company website said it is “heading in a new direction.”

It is unknown what the terms of the deal are. However, 9to5Mac reported back in April that Apple was in talks to buy NextVR for around $100 million.  

This is at least the third acquisition that Apple made this year. Apple also bought Ireland-based voice tech company Voysis and weather app company Dark Sky.

NextVR has raised over $100 million in funding since it launched in 2009.
