Looking for Apple iPhone 12 rumors? You have come to the right place.
The iPhone 12 is not expected to arrive until September 2020, but rumors about the device are already surfacing. Without further ado, here are some iPhone 12 rumors you should know about:
Variants
There are expected to be four versions of the iPhone 12 devices. The four versions will include sizes of 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch (2 versions), and 6.7-inch.
Display
Rather than releasing some models with LCD and some with OLED, Apple is expected to switch to OLED entirely in 2020.
The 6.7-inch and one of the 6.1-inch models will likely have OLED displays with triple-lens cameras. And the 5.4-inch and another 6.1-inch model will likely be cheaper options with dual-lens cameras.
The flagship 2020 iPhone 12 is reportedly going to be 5.4-inch, which would make it the smallest iPhone Apple released since the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 was released. And at 6.7-inch, the iPhone 12 Pro is expected to be the largest iPhone that Apple will be releasing.
Design
Rumor has it that Apple’s iPhone 12 line will be designed with a metal frame that appears similar to the iPhone 4. Ming-Chi Kuo — a financial analyst who is known for correctly predicting Apple rumors — believes that the new iPhones will have a complex segmentation design with trenching and injection molding procedures.
And the overall design is expected to look like an iPhone 4 with a square edge stainless steel frame between the glass front and back. The reason for the new injection molding procedure is to reduce the blocking of the high-frequency transmission efficiency of the internal antenna. In order to protect the grooves in the frame and make the device more shatterproof, Apple will likely use sapphire or tempered glass.
5G
The iPhone 12 is expected to have 5G compatibility. This would make the data speeds much faster than the current line of iPhones.
Specifically, all of the iPhones are expected to have Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem. The X55 has 7Gb/s download and 3Gb/s upload maximum data speeds.
However, 5G support will depend on the city that you are based in. 5G will be rolling out to major cities first in 2020. And it should be fully deployed to cover the globe several years later.
Branding
It seems likely that Apple will stick to the names iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max for 2020. This is the same branding scheme that Apple used for the iPhone 11 in 2019.
I believe that Apple will stick to this branding since many consumers were confused about the previous names. For example, Apple skipped the “iPhone 9” as it released the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X in 2017 at the same time. Then the names iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR were released in 2018 — which made the branding even more confusing.
Going forward, I believe Apple will stick with the Pro and Pro Max branding for its smartphones to make it feel more consistent with the branding of its MacBooks.
In the past, Apple generally used an “S” branding for phones like the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5S, and the iPhone 6S. But since Apple is making drastic changes to its 2020 line of iPhones, it seems likely that Apple will skip an “S” brand.
Processor/RAM
Inside of the iPhone 12 will be an A14 chip. There are rumors that suggest TSMC will be building the 5-nanometer chips that will be used for the A14. By using a 5-nanometer process, it will ensure that the chips are smaller and faster. Plus it will make the iPhone 12 batteries more efficient.
According to Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis, the iPhone 12 Pro models are expected to have 6GB of RAM whereas the iPhone 12 will have 4GB of RAM.
Camera
The flagship iPhone 12 is expected to have a triple-lens 3D camera with a laser sensor. And the camera in the iPhone 12 will likely have a new TrueDepth setup that reduces the size of the notch on the front of the device.
The 3D triple-lens will utilize a laser for calculating the depth information for the subject. This would substantially improve the augmented reality capabilities for the iPhone 12. And it also ensures accurate depth perception for features like Portrait Mode.
There are rumors that Apple is in talks with Sony for its camera sensor tests. And Apple’s suppliers are also ramping up the components for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL).
Potential Fingerprint Sensor
There are rumors that Apple might be integrating an under-display fingerprint sensor. This rumor has been floating around for a while now. This technology might be a few years out, but an analyst at Credit Suisse believes that we could see it this year. The Taiwanese news company Economic Daily News previously reported that at least one iPhone in 2020 will have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor made by Qualcomm.
Battery
The battery capacity of the iPhone 12 line is expected to see a small gain. However, the number of battery life hours are expected to be about the same as previous iPhones.
