Aptar Pharma has acquired PULMOTREE, a Munich-based life sciences company focused on pulmonary drug delivery technologies, expanding its respiratory product portfolio with a non-propellant liquid inhaler platform.
The acquisition adds PULMOTREE’s Kolibri Non-Propellant Liquid Inhaler technology to Aptar Pharma’s broader drug delivery capabilities.
Kolibri is designed for targeted delivery of inhaled therapies to the lungs and can support complex drug molecules, including biologics.
The platform uses a breath-triggered Vibrating Mesh aerosolization engine combined with breath-guidance capabilities intended to improve targeted lung deposition.
Kolibri also includes connectivity features that can support treatment monitoring, patient engagement, and collection of real-world therapy data.
Aptar Pharma and PULMOTREE have worked together since 2024 under an exclusive collaboration agreement.
That partnership allowed pharmaceutical companies to evaluate and gain experience with the Kolibri platform before the acquisition.
Aptar Pharma plans to integrate Kolibri with its existing capabilities across formulation development, device engineering, regulatory support, manufacturing, patient onboarding, and digital health services.
The company said those capabilities could provide pharmaceutical partners with a more complete development path spanning formulation and device design through clinical evaluation and commercialization.
Aptar Pharma also plans to leverage expertise from affiliated businesses including Nanopharm, Noble, and Aptar Digital Health.
Non-Propellant Liquid Inhalers include nebulizers and soft-mist inhalers and are being developed as alternatives to traditional propellant-based inhalation systems.
The acquisition expands Aptar Pharma’s position in respiratory drug delivery while giving the company additional opportunities to work with pharmaceutical partners developing increasingly complex inhaled therapies.
PULMOTREE is based in Munich and has focused on specialized technologies for delivering therapeutic products directly to the lungs.
