Aptera Motors has entered into a strategic partnership with Launch Design covering a production program valued at up to approximately $44 million as the solar electric vehicle company moves toward initial production and higher-volume manufacturing.
Launch Design, formally Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology Co., is a design-for-manufacturing company with more than 3,000 employees, multiple production bases and experience across more than 400 vehicle programs globally.
The production program spans assembly fixtures and tooling, vehicle testing, pilot production and higher-volume production work.
The first fixtures and parts produced through the partnership are intended for Aptera’s first 40 production vehicles, which the companies are targeting to begin building in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Aptera expects the first production bodies and chassis to begin arriving in October 2026. Unlike the company’s earlier Atlas vehicles, which were built for internal validation, Aptera said it plans to begin customer deliveries using the next batch of vehicles.
The partnership also gives Aptera access to Launch’s international supplier network, which the company believes can provide parts and tooling at pricing it would have difficulty obtaining independently.
Rather than shipping individual components to California, Launch’s supplier network is expected to combine parts into larger finished subassemblies before delivering them to Aptera’s final assembly operation.
Aptera said final vehicle assembly will remain in Carlsbad, California.
The larger-subassembly model is intended to reduce the number of individual parts Aptera must receive and integrate, simplifying final assembly as the company attempts to increase vehicle output.
Aptera and Launch have already been working together for more than a year.
During the past six months, the relationship has reduced Aptera’s projected bill of materials, although the company has not disclosed the amount of those projected savings.
Launch’s process engineers are working directly with Aptera on assembly fixtures, procedures and cycle times to prepare the vehicle for more efficient production at scale.
Launch has previously worked on vehicle programs for automakers including BYD, Ford, XPeng, Nio and Tesla.
The financial structure of the program is designed to limit Aptera’s immediate cash requirements.
Aptera will pay two-thirds of approved program costs in cash, while Launch will accept warrants to purchase Aptera shares for the remaining third, representing up to approximately $15 million of approved costs.
The arrangement does not mean Launch is investing approximately $15 million in cash. Instead, Launch is accepting potential equity upside as compensation for a portion of its production work.
Aptera said the structure preserves cash while aligning Launch’s potential financial upside with the success of the vehicles it is helping bring into production.
Aptera expects to finance its cash portion using existing capital, previously announced financing arrangements and potential future debt or equity financing.
The partnership could also support Aptera’s eventual expansion beyond the U.S. through Launch’s manufacturing footprint and international supplier relationships.
Aptera is not announcing international launch dates at this stage and said its current priority remains scaling deliveries in the U.S.
Aptera’s flagship vehicle is being developed as a solar electric vehicle using aerodynamic design, lightweight materials and integrated solar technology to pursue high energy efficiency.
KEY QUOTES:
“This strategic investment enhances our resources, allowing us to bring proven design-for-manufacturing expertise and a global supply chain to Carlsbad without taking on the capital burden of building that expertise from scratch. We expect Launch’s experience will shorten our path to high-volume production and reduce materials costs. We have already seen reductions in our projected bill of materials from the relationship, an early indication that the partnership is improving unit economics before the first production vehicle is built.”
Chris Anthony, Co-CEO Of Aptera Motors
“Launch’s reach extends well beyond manufacturing. Their production bases and supplier relationships give us a practical way to plan for markets outside the United States in the future, where we believe the appetite for a highly efficient solar vehicle is significant.”
Steve Fambro, Co-CEO Of Aptera Motors
