Archer Aviation and Anduril have unveiled a jointly developed autonomous vertical takeoff and landing aircraft platform designed for defense and commercial applications. The companies also introduced Thunder, a defense-focused variant intended to support current and next-generation crewed attack and assault aircraft.
Thunder is classified as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft, placing it among the largest and most capable categories of unmanned aircraft. Anduril designed the platform to increase the reach, payload capacity, and operational effectiveness of crewed military aviation systems.
The clean-sheet aircraft combines Archer’s experience developing electric air taxis with Anduril’s autonomous defense technologies. Rather than modifying an existing aircraft, the companies created a new platform around the performance requirements of military and commercial operators.
The platform uses a series hybrid-electric powertrain designed to provide greater range and endurance than a fully electric aircraft. In this configuration, onboard fuel can support electricity generation while electric motors drive the aircraft’s propulsion systems.
Dual tiltrotors allow the aircraft to take off and land vertically before transitioning to more efficient wingborne flight. This design eliminates the need for a runway while addressing some of the range and efficiency limitations associated with conventional helicopters.
The aircraft can adjust rotor speed across different stages of flight to reduce power demand and fuel consumption. The companies also expect the design to produce a lower acoustic signature at low altitudes, which could improve survivability during defense missions.
Archer and Anduril designed the platform to carry modular, heavy payloads. This approach could allow customers to configure the aircraft for different missions without developing an entirely separate airframe for every application.
Potential defense uses include autonomous strike, reconnaissance, logistics and support for crewed attack or assault aircraft. The companies did not provide detailed specifications for Thunder’s planned range, speed, payload capacity or weapons systems.
The commercial version could support missions requiring runway-independent transportation and substantial payload capacity. Archer plans to announce the platform’s first commercial partners later in the week.
The aircraft builds on years of development and flight testing conducted through Archer’s electric VTOL programs. Archer believes this experience can help the partners move more quickly from design and prototyping into manufacturing and flight operations.
The development team has completed multiple test flights using full-scale surrogate aircraft. These flights are intended to validate propulsion, control and other systems that will contribute to the final aircraft’s performance.
Thunder’s first flight is planned for 2027. The timing remains subject to continued development, testing and successful integration of the aircraft’s autonomous, propulsion and flight-control technologies.
The partnership reflects growing interest in applying commercially developed aerospace technologies to defense programs. Archer and Anduril believe the shared platform can lower development and production costs by serving both military and civilian markets.
