Astemo Americas has announced a significant new investment in Michigan. The company plans to invest $95 million in developing a state-of-the-art regional headquarters complex located in Wixom, a city renowned for its strategic position in the automotive industry. This move is seen as a clear commitment to strengthening its presence and advancing innovation within the region.
The decision to expand comes at a time when the automotive industry is rapidly evolving, especially with the increasing complexity of software demands driven by advancements in autonomous driving and electric vehicle technologies. Recognizing these changes, Astemo aims to enhance its competitiveness in this fast-paced market by focusing on developing Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) technologies not only in the United States but also continuing its substantial presence in Japan.
The new campus in Wixom will be a hub for innovation and development. Covering 26 acres along I-96, the complex will feature a comprehensive testing facility complete with test tracks. It will also include around 185,000 square feet of office and laboratory space dedicated to various functions such as engineering, software development, marketing, customer service, and administrative roles. This new facility is expected to be a catalyst for job creation in the Detroit area, with estimates suggesting the addition of around 200 new employment opportunities, including more than 150 engineering positions focused on SDV technologies.
Construction on this groundbreaking project is slated to commence in spring 2026, with the complex expected to be fully operational by fall 2027. The investment and development plans have garnered attention from local and state officials. Governor Whitmer, along with Clark from Astemo Americas, mentioned that more detailed plans and further updates about the headquarters will be shared later in September.
Astemo itself is a major global player in the automotive supply chain, renowned for its expertise in a wide range of mobility solutions. Its offerings include electric powertrains, chassis systems, and autonomous driving technologies. With a workforce exceeding 15,000 employees in the Americas and a total of around 80,000 worldwide, Astemo continues to be a leader in driving forward the future of mobility.
