Atari Acquires Implicit Conversions To Expand Retro Game Preservation And Modern Console Portfolio

Atari has acquired Implicit Conversions, a game development studio specializing in bringing retro games to modern consoles, adding the team to a growing family of studios that includes Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Implicit Conversions has built its reputation around PlayStation emulation and preservation, with a focus on honoring original game versions, adding historical content and context, and making classic titles accessible on modern platforms. The studio has developed proprietary emulation technology, including Pancake for PS1, Waffle for PS2, and Benedict for PS3, which will remain the team’s primary focus following the acquisition.

The two companies had already established a working relationship prior to the deal, collaborating through Digital Eclipse on the Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection, Rayman, and additional titles to be announced later in 2026. That prior collaboration gave Implicit Conversions direct insight into Atari’s commitment to game preservation and quality, which the studio cited as a key factor in the decision to join the group.

Atari holds a portfolio of more than 200 unique games and franchises and operates a family of brands, including Digital Eclipse, Nightdive Studios, publishing label Infogrames, and community platforms AtariAge and MobyGames. The acquisition of Implicit Conversions expands Atari’s technical capabilities in PlayStation-era emulation and strengthens its broader game preservation efforts.

Bill Litshauer, who co-founded Implicit Conversions, will move into the role of Head of Operations. Robin will become Studio Head. Both founders will remain with the studio and continue leading its day-to-day operations. Existing projects are expected to be completed on their current timelines, and the studio’s community-facing communication and developer licensing relationships are not expected to change materially.

KEY QUOTE:

“I am thrilled to announce that Implicit Conversions will be joining the Atari family. Alongside Digital Eclipse, Nightdive Studios, and of course Atari’s collection of classic IP, we’ll be helping to bring even more retro games to modern consoles. We share the same passion for classic games: honouring the original versions, adding historical content and context, and preserving them for the future. We feel honored to now be a part of that legacy, and can’t wait to contribute.”
