AT&T announced that it will invest more than $250 billion over the next five years to expand telecommunications infrastructure and strengthen connectivity across the United States. The commitment marks a major long-term investment aimed at advancing fiber broadband, wireless networks, and critical communications systems through 2030.

The Dallas-based telecom company said the investment will focus on building and maintaining what it describes as the nation’s largest converged fiber and wireless network. The initiative comes as AT&T commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first phone call, highlighting the company’s long history in communications technology while positioning itself for the next generation of digital infrastructure.

According to the company, the investment will accelerate the deployment of fiber, 5G home internet, wireless, and satellite connectivity across urban, suburban, and rural communities. The effort is intended to support the growing demand for reliable, always-on connectivity that underpins technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, autonomous systems, and other data-intensive services.

The company also plans to strengthen FirstNet, the nationwide public safety network built for first responders, while modernizing infrastructure to improve resilience and security. AT&T noted that its satellite collaboration with AST SpaceMobile will help extend coverage to remote and underserved regions.

Beyond network expansion, AT&T said the initiative will include investments in workforce development and community programs. With roughly 110,000 U.S. employees, the company plans to recruit and train additional technicians and engineers required to build and maintain telecommunications infrastructure. The company also expects to hire thousands of technicians in 2026, noting that most jobs at AT&T do not require a four-year college degree.

The investment will also support research and innovation aimed at strengthening cybersecurity and enabling new technologies that rely on high-speed connectivity. AT&T said it will continue developing AI-driven threat-detection capabilities while expanding its collaboration with public-sector partners to support national resilience and emergency communications.

By expanding fiber, wireless, and satellite infrastructure, AT&T said it aims to provide faster and more reliable connectivity to households, businesses, and public institutions. The company described the investment as foundational for emerging technologies such as remote healthcare, autonomous vehicles, and AI-powered services.
